What does age have to do with it, Lew?

I think it makes a big difference. Sounds like folks -- myself included -- are trying to point out to him that he could be making a big mistake if he tries to screw over his friend. Maybe he hasn't had enough past experience to have done this before and suffered the consequences, or perhaps he hasn't had this happen to him yet to know how much it sucks.

Plus he's too young to drive it home. :)

It means his dad may be young enough for the amp to end up a JCM 900! :smack: :chairfall

Re: I AM FREKAING OUT RIGHT NOW (cool story)

Re: I AM FREKAING OUT RIGHT NOW (cool story)

ok lets start making bets here.

i bet its gonna be a JCM800 at best.

i agree with the age thing on many issues. first of all yeah it is definatly NOT gonna be a vintage marshall ( as in PLexi or something like that) , that would be more of MY dads amp if he ever played guitar, LOL.

secondly, how can a 15 yr old be so spineless as to manipulate his friend?? thats the age where you are supposed to think that friendship is gold.

Dude dont screw with your friend just for a fricken amp. so does that mean that if you had to choose between a friend and a Plexi you would pick the PLexi???!!!

That is really what music is NOT about. remember??? that is why we love these amps and gear, cause we are MUSICIANS not soulless people that just gather gear.

i wouldnt do that to a friend for a million bucks let alone an amp.

Jimi Hendrix's Marshall didnt make him, HE made the Marshall. Hendrix had the Magic not the fricken amp. cause he was a cool human being.

sorry for getting philosophical, but jeepers not for an amp man!

Re: I AM FREKAING OUT RIGHT NOW (cool story)

OKOKOK!!!! SORRY!!! My wording was off!
First off hes not a "friend" like we never hang out outside of school (or in it for that matter), we talk and **** and hes a cool guy and all that and....

I didnt mean RIP OFF, I meant get it cheap, I',m obviously going to offer a reasonable price. As for "JCM800 at best" well your right, and a JCM800 is my dream amp, your point? Also, his dad hasnt played in YEARS and he has a vintage flanger in a shed in a bucket. He has a marshall halfstack in his SHED for many years (remember my friend claims it still works)...if he knew the value it wouldnt be in a ****ing shed!!

Basically I'm not goign to "ripp him off" but I'm not paying what its worth :) Sorry if my words came out wrong there, I'm not as evil as I sound!! Also to answer the one question, If this kid finds out and never speaks to me again then so be it, I'll have a ****ing half stack.

***my wording was off and I apologize because it did make me seem pretty evil eh?***

Re: I AM FREKAING OUT RIGHT NOW (cool story)

ok dude,

thats cool. yeah the wording was a bit weird.

why dont you tell your friend that you want to buy the stuff but you want to make the offer to his dad. You could also ask his dad how much he would want for the stuff. If he hasnt played in years and doesnt plan on it maybe he would give the stuff to you for alot less than you expect. i really dont think that they were waiting for a kid your age to come by and make them rich or something from an amp.

No prob dude. I used to and still get overexcited about **** like that too. just make sure that the amp is in good working order as well so you dont get ripped off in the end.

cheers!

Re: I AM FREKAING OUT RIGHT NOW (cool story)

I think what he's trying to say is he's looking for a bargain, not to rip someone off.

Considering that this guy is an acquaintence, and not a buddy, the fairest way may just be to ask the dad what he wants for it. Who knows--he may just say go ahead and take it, I don't use it, or maybe he'll ask for a few hundred bucks. This way he's set the price and you're not ripping him off.

I had a guy give me a car that way. I worked with him and we both know what the car was worth but he just didn't want it. Some people actually don't want to go through the bother of selling an item and having strangers call and come to the house or shipping if through ebay and would just rather have the space in the shed.

Re: I AM FREKAING OUT RIGHT NOW (cool story)

If hes not your friend, get a slightly unfair price for it, dont go overboard like $400 or something haha. If he was your friend I'd say offer him close to what its really worth.

Dude, kid finds a cool amp he can get at a low price and all you guys are saying 'NO BAD KARMA'?

I thought bargain-hunting for cool guitar gear was what the forum was all about. jeezus.

i think pretty much every human tries to spend as little money as they can in aquiring new stuff. Duh.

Re: I AM FREKAING OUT RIGHT NOW (cool story)

I read the first post and thought, trying to rip his buddy off... not cool. Just my two cents.

Re: I am freaking out right now (cool story)

Yeah, I see where oyu all got that from!! I plan on going to see it and htne returning bymyself to talk to the father rather then through the friend, because he'll be like "nah he wont sell it" because I dunno, but I'll go see it with him then speak to the dad. Yeah I just got REALLY excited when he said "Marshall"...hell it might not even be one for all I know!
But ya I doint know when hes at his dads next, I dont want to seem too interested or else he'll know somethings up and tell his dad how mch I want it then he'll ask for more.

I don't know if Lew did actually answer this then pull his post, and I'm going to come off like a total knob...

I believe there's a certain maturity level you should have before you acquire "vintage" gear. You need to be able to appreciate what you're getting. Even if, *especially if* you get the thing for nothing, you need to appreciate what it is. When you're 15 you don't have that appreciation. When you're 21 you don't really have that appreciation. How many old Melody Makers are out there that don't have humbuckers routed into them? How many LP Deluxes sport bad full size humbucker "conversions?" How many pre-CBS Strats or Teles have you seen routed out for a Floyd or Kahler and locking nut? How many metal panel or plexi Marshalls have been "modded" or sport holes drilled for effects loops or something else?

The point is, you get a cool old piece of gear you need to be able to understand why that old piece of gear is "cool." When you realize and appreciate why that item is cool to begin with, you're less likely to "mod" it.

Not that I've been down that road...

Not that I've had any cool old pieces that have been ruined by bad "mod" attempts...

Re: I am freaking out right now (cool story)

Emptypockets-

You're on and off on your comment IMO. This forum is about partially getting good deals/info/opinions on items, but its not about ripping off people.

Although 70s and 80s sport some good Marshalls, it may not even be for you kido. If you're a metal head, IMO a Marshall JMP wouldn't cut ti too much. But if it's a JCM800 go for it, see what I mean. Also, just because its an 80s or 70s Marshall, that doesn't mean it'll sound so hot. Some JCM800s don't sound as hot as some other JCM800s. Keep that in mind.

I'm with you man... it'd be the same as if someone died and a widow had her husband's halfstack sitting there for years untouched and you offered her 200 for it. Then it'd be "score" though.

Dude, go for the stack, but don't sacrifice a friendship for it. Let everyone get something out of the deal so everyones happy.

Re: I am freaking out right now (cool story)

Holy **** boys calm down, you make it sound like I'm killing the guy. Maybe I'll just delete this ****ing thread.

As for the Golden boy, I'm going to be a **** here and say how do you know I dont apreciate "vintage" gear? your just being VERY stereotypical by saying that. I'm obviously not going to mod it and you guys have taken this WAY out of whack. The "mod" attempts you speak of were probably mostly done when the stuff was near new like most people do because they do not know what it will be worth. Honestly boys this has just gone to ****, I thoguht itd be a cool story about a Marshall in a shed that I could probably get for cheap and I'm getting chewed about it...mostly because of my age. Well if thats th reason why then **** you for being stereotypical.

Re: I am freaking out right now (cool story)

It isn't about age. If Lew posted a similar thread I would say the same things.

But find out what type of Marshall it is ASAP yo.

Re: I am freaking out right now (cool story)

Yeah srry Lew I was in a bad mood because I was arguing with a bandmember but it still stands...just less hostile.
