I did something a little crazy

Re: I did something a little crazy

You should throw out some props for the guy that did it incase anyone else in your area needs something like that done.

Re: I did something a little crazy

Thanks guys. I was hoping for some stories about times you went the unconventional route for a guitar (Blackouts in a Rickenbacker) with good results.

I don't need EVERYTHING to be about me. :) Even my narcissism has limits.

Well, the worst I've done is mix Duncans and DiMarzios in the same guitar. :D

Oh, and slapped a Strat neck on a Tele body.

Yeah, not really unconventional these days.

This thing plays like a shredder now. Looks like a tele, plays like a Charvel, and sounds like a gat danged grand piano.

Anybody else ever commit sacrilege like this, and love it?

That's what I call an improvement!!!!!

GREAT point.

Tom, of Tom's Guitar Repair in the Irvington area of Indianapolis.

He did an excellent job. I went to this guy because I played my friend's Jimmy Hendrix Strat, which previously had been notoriously hard to play, but Tom put jumbos on it and it was amazing after that. It was so good that it left no question who I would have work on the Tele.

Re: I did something a little crazy

I could really use some jumbo frets on one of my Bullet necks... Might have to look into pricing that.

I'm sure pricing differs greatly but mine cost about $225 to have done.

Now, that's counting the fact that I didn't need a new nut and he was able to avoid damaging the finish.

Re: I did something a little crazy

I suppose you are mainly a rythym player. I would gone with a 12" radius with true jumbos... They kinda look like 6100's, but i guess they are 6105's? 6105's would work great with 9.5" radius.6150's are the tall/narow frets, next step up from vintage and aren't really "jumbo".I think.

Re: I did something a little crazy

Hell yeah dude, jumbo frets are the shiznat. I can't stand tiny frets on Fenders. I like a size between 6105's and 6000's. 6115 seems perfect for me.

So didja get stainless or regular nickel-steel?

I wish I could tell you the specific size but I didn't keep the invoice. They're pretty wide as well as tall.

I went with nickel. I like the feel of stainless but I was worried about maintenance costs. I also use pure nickel strings, which don't wear frets down as quickly. Plus, I'm not convinced that I like the sound of stainless.

Re: I did something a little crazy

Nice mod! I love that 52 hot rod.

What's that PRS behind the tele's neck? And is that a Vigier on the left?

Thanks!

The PRS is the short-lived Johnny Hiland model. Great guitar. My favorite neck ever.

No Vigier, but the 12-string is a '90s Japanese Ibanez, and the black guitar is a G&L Legacy HB.

Re: I did something a little crazy

I don't have an unusual mod success story to report, but I do have a Gold Foil planned for the neck of my Tele three projects from now. I'll report back.

Your Tele is awesome and 9-1/2" radius is pefect. What gauge strings are you using?

Please do. That's an awesome idea.

DR Pure Blues 10s. I've tried every string brand under the sun but I had to go back to the DRs.

Re: I did something a little crazy

What's the actual advantage of tiny frets? To me it seems like just tradition. Or am I missing something obvious?

If I went with a USA Strat I'd aim for a Highway One instead of a Am. Std. just because of fretwire size.

Oh and sadly, I have no stories of related "sacrilege" to go with yours. But I really like what you did man and wish my Strat had those big ass frets as well.
