I HATE every single one of you who...

Re: I HATE every single one of you who...

I'm talking about the original design; Leo spent his time trying gut as many features as possible and come up with a bare bones design that anyone could afford. Noble thought, but not a particularly impressive instrument.

The "original" Les Paul didn't even intonate correctly with its non adjustable wraparound bridge...why do you keep slagging on Fenders designs? I believe the original Firebird was a patent infringement on Leo's offset waist.

I actually like Gibsons...but to put one guitar company and put all others on a pedestal is narrow minded at best.

Here is some fine country twangin' on a tele by an obviously inferior guitar player.

Re: I HATE every single one of you who...

There's just something about almost any Gibson; Les Paul, SG, ES335, Explorer, V, Firebird, etc when you find one you connect with, something magical happens.

I've played many fine Fenders, but never had that same mojo.

Re: I HATE every single one of you who...

^ yeah. i actually think Gibson uses some sort of ancient black magic or voodoo on their guitars, like maybe a certain percentage of each finish is pure sacrificial lambsblood or something.

I think you've got the right idea. However, sometimes the worker in charge of mixing the magical ingredients with the regular industrial chemicals forgets to do his job. That's why we have the ones that are pure magic and the ones that are duds. The rest of them have a bit of magic that can be coaxed out by the right player.

Re: I HATE every single one of you who...

This thread has become hilarious! :D
Whats wrong with praising a Gibson SG?

There's no point in argueing over taste on the internet, even if you win you'll still look like a dumba$$! :D

Re: I HATE every single one of you who...

Love my SG. Love my Tele. The SG replaced the Tele as my fave, but, geeze, Blueman, you jumped the shark.

Let's hear to for Leo's response to Gibson of his day. Give the people what they want instead of telling people what they need. Hurray for unbreakable, affordable guitars! Stick it in the eye of the elitists!

Up yours, fuddy duddy traditionalists. That's why I like the SG and the Tele.

And are you trying to say that an Epi G400 is a work of luthiery???? Even calling a regular Gibson SG Standard one is a bit silly given it's simple design. No cap, no arch, no embellishment, simple. I say they're even more simple than the Tele design. A little contour on the body? Big deal, I could put that much contour in my Tele with a belt sander - Beck did!

If a guitar has IT and does IT for you - rapture and joy... screw anything else.

Re: I HATE every single one of you who...

A SG killed my father and violated my mother!

Rumor has it the SG was brought up on criminal charges. After a drawn out trial, the SG got off with a hung jury. The SG's bank account was significantly lower in the aftermath, but no foul play was ever proven. Doubt remains to this day.

P.S. I'm sorry for your mother.

Re: I HATE every single one of you who...

The difference is probably due to the fact that no matter how well built, or how carefully chosen the woods are, or how much sustain they have, or what special electronics they have, or how fast the neck is, or how well they stay in tune, the sad fact of the matter is that PRS's are just not cool!

??? SG's have what were considered in the trade as the classic Gibson 'upscale' features, like a set neck, angled headstock, angled body, large inlays, more expensive PU's (HB's or P-90's), 2 vol/2 tone, a nicer finish, & a contoured body. Leo cut costs by eliminating all of them and going with a 'slab & a broomstick'. There's a genius to accomplishing that, but Tele's are as plain and no-frills as it gets.

Whether you like it or not, it's hard to argue with me when I say this is a beautiful guitar.

Did you know the first Tele's didn't have truss rods (an Epiphone invention by the way) which I believe halted production for a while until that was addressed?

Alright, since you asked: Some very good things have been done with Fenders, as I've said many times here, and some of my favorite guitarists played Strats. But some guys forget their humble beginnings, and that they were designed to be cheap to build. Leo was proud of that; he put a lot of effort into cutting corners and still having a playable instrument. There's no reason for anyone to get offended by that. A Strat in the hands of Hendrix was amazing. Unfortunately, 90% of the guitarists I hear that play SSS Strats sound tinny and shrill; they have no idea how to get the magical tones that Hendrix, Blackmore, Trower, and Healey did. It's much easier to get a good tone with a Gibson; doesn't mean they're necessarily better players, but at least I don't get a headache from schreechy sounds like I do with Fenders.

My beef has two parts: 1) Fenders were designed to be cheap and look it, although in the hands of a great guitarist, that's not a consideration; I hear a musician, not the instrument; and 2) Strats are way over-represented and most Strat owners seem to have one because 'everyone else does' but have no idea how to make theirs sound good. I hear the instrument, not the musician. These guys have no business with a Strat if they don't know that there is a limit to how much treble the human ear can endure. Maybe they should have gotten an LP or SG instead. If you're a good player with a Strat, I'd love to hear you play. If you're schreechy and tinny, sorry I'm leaving so I can rearrange my sock drawer. I've got CD's where solos were ruined by a guy with a horribly tinny Strat; I've never heard a guy ruin a solo simply by virtue of playing a Gibson (although maybe he ruined the solo by being a crappy player). I can't tell you how many times at local gigs and blues festivals that someone with a Strat had an annoyingly schreechy sound and made the set unpleasant. My head still hurts thinking about it. In the right hands, a Fender is a joy to listen to; unfortunately, most guys don't have the right hands. Should we have some kind of a permit system, where they've got to pass some tests before they're let loose in public with a Fender, to show they understand that midrange and bass are an integral part of a good tone? I'm only thinking of the public good here.

Where's my esteemed colleague Mr. Parker; he's quite vocal on the subject.

Yes, I did know about the Teles and the truss rods..I just wanted to point out that the Les Paul did not jump out of the gate perfect...it took a few years to iron out their problems as well.

I won't comment on my tone....you can ask Darnright, who is a forum bro...he saw me live twice and he would be more objective...I have also posted some clips on here in T&C if you wish to look/listen

I have heard screechy strats I have also heard Les Pauls And other HB equipped guitars that had so much bottom end that they competed with the bass player....not warm....muddy. It does boil down to the player, their touch and an understanding of how to sound good.

I will point out one thing I love about Fenders and I could do a test if someone else is willing....I will take my Strat and hold it chest high over a concrete floor and drop it....if anyone wants to do this with their Gibson, I will make a prediction who will be going to the luthier shop the next day.

Not all things made cheap are bad....they are different. The SG was suppose to be a Les Paul, but Les wouldn't stand for it...he said it was too fragile and put a stop to his name being put on it.

It is easier for you to get a good tone with a Gibson...not everyone.

I really do like Gibsons and all kinds of guitars....It just makes my skin crawl when people bad mouth something over and over when it is objective.

Mojo is mojo, and it can come from a 59 Les Paul or it can be a Squier Strat...depends on the person behind it.

It's easier to sound boring with a Gibson then with a Strat... a bad player on a Gibson might make the guitar sound boring or sound too shrill while he is trying to cut through the band. Plus there's that humbucker tone that lacks any openness and resonance that a lot of players get. Even the good ones.

As for carrying a guitar for the wrong reasons - today I see more players using humbucker equipped guitars in rock music - I think that the Strat is becoming the alternative...

Bill, I have to take exception with this. It's like saying, "My car can run over nails better than yours!" It's not supposed to happen. It doesn't make one a better instrument.

Not really. I find that to be rather ugly. Not the guitar itself, but that god awful color scheme.
