"I perform this mod on every guitar I own..."

Re: "I perform this mod on every guitar I own..."

About the only mod I always do is, Strats get converted to master vol/master tone. I then I use the extra hole for some kind of switch.

Re: "I perform this mod on every guitar I own..."

Coil split on humbuckers.
Connect tone pot to bridge single coil in Strats.
Big ass strap buttons (I hate straplocks)

Re: "I perform this mod on every guitar I own..."

--kill switch..
--dimazio cliplock straps
--i used to have every guitar with a volume bypass but im starting to do things a bit different on my main guitar.. i.e. next time i wire up my #1 guitar in a few weeks.. i will just wire the bridge directly to the jack..

--eventually ill have my 3 main guitars wired with the dual mode tone controls from guitarelectronics.com instead of a regular tone.. i get alot more use out of these it seems..

--all my guitars have coil splitting capability if possible

-- when i rewire my guitars i always use cloth covered wire.. except for the ground to the bridge, in which case i use solid core w/green insulation

EVENTUALLY.. i will have brass blocks on all of my tremolo equipped guitars and have them blocked/stabilized

all of my guitars are highly customized to fit my playing.. im not planing on ever selling any of my guitars ever so im not to really worried about resell value

Re: "I perform this mod on every guitar I own..."

I don't qualify.

My most common mod is that I put Sperzel locking tuners on "all" guitars with the exception of a PRS SE baritone. There's no way fat strings will fit through Sperzels. I even use locking tuners on hardtails.

Re: "I perform this mod on every guitar I own..."

I file the nut slots on all my guitars so that when open, the action is similar to having a capo at the first fret. That's more of a setup than a mod, but it seems to be a point of setup that few people actually do... so I'm calling it a mod.

Other common mods, mod all my Strats to do B+M+N or B+N, install the TBX treble/bass control, variable split multiple humbuckers using a single dual or triple gang pot, selecting between multiple capacitors with a six way dial, and partially splitting and tapping using a trip pot in series.

Re: "I perform this mod on every guitar I own..."

Dunlop Straplocks on everything with a rear mount top button (Vs, Explorers, etc.), Schallers on side mount (LPs, etc.).

I used to disconnect the tone until I realized the 50s mod cleans up all the mud from 'modern' wiring, so now I do that to everything.

Re: "I perform this mod on every guitar I own..."

I typically don't mod my G&Ls, they just don't need anything done to them...though I've bought a couple of used ones that needed to be put back to stock.

Gibsons ALWAYS get Schaller Strap Locks. ( The G&L strap button is very secure, so I don't usually feel a need to replace them.) I almost always need to have the nut action lowered, and the saddles filed to the correct radius. On my non-Historic Les Pauls, I like to install a lightweight aluminum tailpiece, and a metal jackplate.

Martins might need a little filing at the nut, and sometimes I'll have a strap button installed at the neck.

That's about it...nothing major.

Dunlop Dual Design Strap Locks

50s wiring with a decent cap, usually orange drop or mallory

All of my electrics have SD pickups

Re: "I perform this mod on every guitar I own..."

I'll answer this question as "What mods/features would you do on a custom build guitar?"

Why answer this way? Because some of these are so small things to me that I don't have to have them or that the mere time (and money) to do them is not worth it. But IF I could have them I would.

Schaller straplocks (don't like Dunlops for some reason), Locking tuners (any good brand/style will do), Stainless steel jumbo frets, Single coils would be noiseless, no tone knob, some sort of split or series/parallel wiring, compound or flat radius fretboard.

Oh and I topwrap on stop tailpieces ;)

Re: "I perform this mod on every guitar I own..."

Schaller strap locks.

I also like having a miniswitch to split the bridge pickup (On most guitars with humbuckers).

Re: "I perform this mod on every guitar I own..."

Straplocks on everything. Mostly Dunlop, but Schaller on the Les Paul because I think they look better.

Re: "I perform this mod on every guitar I own..."

I don't use strap locks either. I used them once on a Gibson Les Paul but I really hated them. I have since discovered Warmoth's standard strap buttons and use them on all my guitars and basses. I never have had a strap slip off them *knocks on wood*.

Re: "I perform this mod on every guitar I own..."

I take a hack saw to the wiggle stick...make it about 5 inches long.

I'm requesting pics of this.

Can you explain why you do it? Do you grind the end down so it's not sharp?

I always put a cap in series with my neck pickups. 6800 on most pickups. I don't find a need for frequencies below the guitar's fundamentals and it makes it easier to balance EQ's when switching back and forth between bridge pickups.

That's pretty interesting mod. Using a high-pass filter cap on the neck pickup. Around what frequency does it attenuate the lows?

Pickup and control cavity shielding.

How much of a difference does this usually make? I can see doing it for single coils, but does it make a big difference on humbuckers?

Coil split on humbuckers.
Connect tone pot to bridge single coil in Strats.
Big ass strap buttons (I hate straplocks)

What is it that you hate about straplocks? It took me a while to get used to the way they hold the strap out about 3/4" further from the body.

Re: "I perform this mod on every guitar I own..."

Yes, except a particular guitar that I LOATHE to ever touch. That one is bone-stock.

That on aside, yep, quite a bit.

ALL my axes have a bridge bucker (although I don't believe that one to be a mod), all of them have push-pull(s) that split at least one pickup (all except my SSH split the neck and all except one HH split the bridge. Finally my Parker still has its' stock wiring and uses one p-p to split both together).
The other thing I ALWAYS do because of the above is the Treble Bleed Mod. I really like the clean-yet-grainy tone I get from a split neck bucker with the volume turned to about 2 so I always mode them for extra clarity.
