I REALLY dont understand this...

I'm researching for clips on Legacy heads... Xeromus sent me some good clips he collected and I picked out the tones I liked.

The tones I liked used a 4x12 with V30s for the speakers. The tones I did NOT like used a 4x12 with G12H30s. I made decisions on what I liked before I knew which speakers were on which clips.

Whenever I play a tube amp at gigging volume/power levels in a music store, I always prefer the sound of G12H30s to V30s. The V30s sounded too woofy and the mids werent in the right spots for me. The G12H30s sound great no matter what I put through them.

So I like V30s on recordings but not live and vice versa with G12H30s....

WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH ME!?!?!?

Get a 4x12 with 2 V30s & 2 H30s & put them in an X pattern..........

I think one of the reasons also is because that amp was engineered specifically to be used with vintage 30's in the legacy cab. The amp's voicing was suited for them and vice versa. I think the Legacy would sound like mud with a darker speaker.

I know what you mean, Brendan...I love all the tons I hear recorded with V30's, but hate playing them.

I think it's a feel thing, we discussed this in the pickup lounge yesterday. We're trying so hard to get a tone out of the thing we're playing, and it's not longer fun, so we view it as "bad tone."

Insanely simplified, but you get the picture.

It's a wierd 'sound vs. feel' thing.

I remember when Marin did the shootout between the C-5 and CC. A lot of people favored the CC, based on how it sounded on tape. Everytime I do A/B tests with the C-5 and CC in my guitars and amps, the C-5 sounds slightly better to me.

I think it really comes down to how a piece of gear interacts with all your other gear.
Most highgain amps nowadays are designed in tandem with Vintage 30's, so it's debateable whether or not a different speaker will sound better or worse.

i have exactly the same thing with JCM 900s..

LOVE the recorded tone on them.. live, i hate the damned things :laugh2:.. that fizziness turns into a subtle sparkle on record to my ears..

V30's are known to mic well.

It depends on what you are trying to do. If you know you like G12H30's, then get them.

Nothing is wrong with you.

I'm currently working on a project to build my own 4x12s and 2x12s, and sell the ones I don't need after i get done playing with them. :laugh2:

Maybe I need to go back and listen to the speakers again... Maybe I missed something.

How many 4x12s have you played through loaded with V30s vs. H30s?

Between using other people's gear, renting gear, using house gear at venues and recording studios, and working at Guitar Center maintaining the amps, quite a few actually. I always got my favorite tones using G12H30s or Greenbacks, but I prefer the G12H30s for the extended bass and mids.

I should mention that I always prefer Marshall cabs. I don't like Mesa cabs very much.
