I think I just fell in love with a firebird

Yesterday I was in a local shop and they had a Firebird copy with 3 mini hums by a brand called Dillon. I have never heard of this company nor have I ever really been a firebird fan and never picked one up but I picked up the copy and it just felt GOOD. This thing felt huge like if I threw it at someone it could do some damage i'm not sure of the scale length but it felt longer then normal like this guitar felt bigger then me in my hands and it played exactly how I want a guitar to play very resonant and good clarity mind you I was playing through a 73' Silverface Twin reverb. The action was low but not super low and still had a good sustain. Im not a hardtail guy but this guitar changed my mind. Their was no price on it but i'm sure I could have got it for a steal IF I had the cash. I'm officially now a Firebird fan and will choose one over a LP any day.


This is a pic of it but the one I played had a Tobacco burst like finish.

There must be something to 'em if Johnny Winter's been playing them almost exclusively for this long.

Another company that makes cool Firebirds is Kauer Guitars. They cost considerably more than the Dillions, though.

My buddy has a Dillion Phoenix (Firebird) and he's very happy with it. I think they look super cool!

I have a Firebird Studio and, although it's pretty heavy, it's the most balanced guitar I've gigged with. Sits perfectly on the strap and everything's in the right place.

Dillion's made some nice stuff. They had this thing called a Tour V that looked like the Gibson version in LPC livery only years ahead of time. Obviously, Gibson told them to cease and desist then introduced their own.

I have a Gibson Firebird. I find it to be the only Gibson that is as comfortable to play as a Strat. But the downside is that the neck and join is thin, and coupled with the large headstock, I find if I move around while playing you hear it go in and out of tune at undesirable moments.

I love my 70's Tribute Firebird. Huge headstock & baseball bat neck but still somehow balanced and feels great

My SG does that too, just comes with the territory. If they made it different it wouldn't sound the same.

Old Deans do that, too, particularly the MLs and Zs. There's just not a whole lot of material holding them together up there, especially with a big ol' sloppy humbucker rout.

This is what the copy looked like except the tail piece was a bit further back then the Gibby and was slightly crooked.

Johnny plays a guitar made for him by Dan Erlewine called the Laser when he is not using his Bird. Many mistake it for Steinbergers. Check out Dans website he has it on there. He calls it the Johnny Winter model.

you know who used to make a nice looking Firebird copy was Jackson guitars.

Not quite correct. The Lazer was designed by and built by Dan's cousin, Mark Erlewine.
