I think I just fell in love with a firebird

Re: I think I just fell in love with a firebird

where the neck "meets" the body. (Is that better? :) )

Basically, the neck is too thin and bends to easily while playing.

The one I played didn't have that problem it was a fairly thick neck with good access up to the 22 fret.

Not quite correct. The Lazer was designed by and built by Dan's cousin, Mark Erlewine.

Thanks

Always liked the look of the old Fire Birds. Have played a few of them. They seem a little odd to me when they have standard tuners. I like the look of them better with the banjo style of tuners.

I've owned over a hundred guitars, and yet the Firebird is still one I haven't yet owned. But, I'm always keeping my eyes open for a special one.

The one that nags at me lately is one of my favorite Gibson colors.....gold. I want this F'er badly.
50th Anniversary that's selling for $2,000. I wish they finished it better though.

That Erlwine Lazer is NICE! Fifteen years ago I would have said it sucks, it has no headstock, no one in Kiss or Metallica plays one onstage, etc. Nowadays, if it sounds cool, stays in tune, and is comfortable to play, it's okay in my book.

I know Firebirds aren't common, but out of a hundred guitars I'd think one would have been a Firebird.

Re: I think I just fell in love with a firebird

The only Firebird I really loved was a '76 Bicentennial model. I STILL want one. I have played a few vintage models from the mid 60's and they are cool, but the '76 just felt and sounded really good. Those minihums are just killer pickups. I have a Duncan Firebird in the neck on my Twistedcaster! If you are really looking at a Firebird you owe it to yourself to go play a Gibson. There are some challenges with them. The banjo tuners that are normally on the vintage ones make the headstock heavy and they tend to slide down, but a good quality leather strap will minimize/eliminate this. The neck at the headstock is a weak point and many of these have had the headstock snap off. If you are careful & treat the guitar with respect it should not be a concern. The Gibsons come in Firebird7,5,3,&1. I personally always liked the 3 & 5. The 7 has that middle pickup & it just gets in my way. The 5 has the Vibroloa system & can be somewhat problematic for tuning so the 3 would be one of my first choices. It has a stop bar & dots, the 5 has block inlays and the Vibrola arm. For some reason Gibson is now using the Steinberger tuners and IMHO that kind of takes away from the appeal of the Firebirds..

i've tried a few at the store. unfortunately not set up well but they do sound rocking and look cool. feels thin but the bound neck throws me off. The neck is also extended out more like a bass guitar.

Re: I think I just fell in love with a firebird

I have never played a Firebird before! But LOVE the look of a sunburst one with 2 mini humbuckers... not sure if it would fit my style but it sure looks awesome

Re: I think I just fell in love with a firebird

I came real close to buying an ESP Firebird once, teal with mini-hums and a Floyd, lolz. The dicks at the shop were so bad I decided not to give them my money.
