I think i might like this one (toobscreamer content)

Re: I think i might like this one (toobscreamer content)

Wow, those guys have high post counts! :)

IF the thing does as he says, and has an adjustable headroom control, so to speak ... And you are not a guitar-volume kind of player ... Then I can see this being a useful pedal, indeed.

Otherwise, it's another TS ... and it sounds like you have bt/dt.

If I put my cynical hat on, I would say that overdrive pedals, especially TS variants, have reached the point of 'mathoms' in the guitar world and I think it is now down to ppl buying what they like the LOOKS of over sound and performance at this point.

Taking off my Cynical hat, I would say these days If I am looking for saturation or OD and not looking at a boost, I am far more interested with what is coming out of Catalinbread. I have 3 Catalinbread pedals and if I had the dosh, would probably own everything they make!

Re: I think i might like this one (toobscreamer content)

I am just not a TS guy but sometimes that is the sound you need.

When I need that sound I have an AnalogMan TS-9/808 that is still the best Tubescreamer I have ever heard and for the louder, more brash, more gainy version of that sound a plain old Fulldrive 2 is hard to beat and I have one of those as well but they see VERY little use...

If I am going to use an op-amp OD pedal the King of Tone is the pedal I reach for!

Re: I think i might like this one (toobscreamer content)

I bet you can't tell who I've been taking advice from in this forum, my main ODs are a Fulltone 2 for the TS type sound and the King of Tone for flatter overdrive. ;)

With a name like yours, you might just be more attuned to fuzz pedal and their response. Obviously as you know, your rig has to be tuned a little differently to use fuzzes well.

Hello . . . i did not know that !

So a Fulldrive 2 is pretty much a grittier sounding 808 ? Kinda !?!

Re: I think i might like this one (toobscreamer content)

Never thought I'd like a TS variant either but I got a visual sound drivetrain now and although it is dark sounding it really adds a smooth thick boost to my fuzz sound when placed after my fuzz

Re: I think i might like this one (toobscreamer content)

+1 for the Fulldrive2
Really like the old blue Fulldrive 2.
It has lots of little toggle switches that will flatten out the sound or hump it. And the boost on the right is really nice when I push it into the little box that that feeds my obsessions, the OCD.
That's a two up on any garden variety TS'er.

Does anyone know it the Radial Tonebone Classic is a TS'ish style pedal ?

Tube Screamer variants are kind of like strat pickups with the same specs. They always have their own sound, and words and even clips can't tell me if I'll love them or not. You've just got to buy and try.

I've had the Ibanez TS's, many Fulltone FDII's in orange, blue, and cream, and many other variants.

Right now, I have the T Rex Moller on the subtle side, and the Green Rhino on the bulky side. I'm always open to switch things around....like Cmatmods Signa Drive, handwired TS808, or whatever comes along. When you're using amps you really like, you can pretty much use any of them and get a good TS sound. I use them subtly anyway. But mostly, I'm looking for big bottom end, pleasing mids, and natural highs. The variants have become better at bottom end and lower shifted mids, using the basic TS circuit.

Same here.
Would like to get one with a decent low end.
Always wanted to try the 'new'ish' Ibanes BB9

I tend to agree with this completely! I've got a Green Rhino that I like for TS duties, and it does that well, but if you're looking for interesting dirt options/flavors, there are some really cool things coming from companies like Catalinbread, Jetter, EarthQuaker, Wampler, etc.

Recipe for a tubescreamer (or any variant including the boss sd-1) with bottom end:
replace c3 (.047uf) with .1uf, or .22uf or even .33 uf until you are happy.
FWIW the fulldrive has the .1uf already. but i find its still a bit constricted for my personal taste unless you are only using it as a lead boost. My fave is .22. Fat, but the low end still holds together. .33 gets a bit flabby.

Recipe for more headroom and creamier/less buzzy clipping:
replace one or more of the clipping diodes with LED's. Add a third if you want even more headroom and asymmetric clipping. Just make sure they are intalled with the correct polarity. Just normal 3mm red leds are fine.

All up, about 50c worth of parts.

You can keep going and install a burr brown opamp to reduce noise and increase clarity and punch, or replace resistors with metal film, or even upgrade the voltages on the capacitors, but all of this stuff is pretty subtle and inaudible in a band. The bass cap makes a huge difference and so do the LED's tho.
