I Want a new amp. Marshall guys help please.

Re: I Want a new amp. Marshall guys help please.

The JSX is really cool. The gain channel was insane amounts of gain for me but it was really easy to get liquid sustain and it was pretty smooth.
The clean channel was really flexible and I hear it was designed for pedals.

But the JVM sounds, to me, the best for metal while having the look, feel, and sound of marshall. And it sounds amazing down to almost a whisper so if you're not running it wide open all the time, well it was made to sound good without that but sounds better with it. It has that liquidy sustain as well.

edit: also about the AVT I think they did... OK for what it was and the time it was made, and you know the sound of solid state/hybrid amps, they get fizzy, the fizz sounds harsher than tube fizz, and they lack a certain punch and interaction between the amp and the speaker.
Tube amps are better for me in about every way but that doesn't make the AVT automatically crap.

With a $700 budget, I would suggest a used Axe FX Ultra.

Re: I Want a new amp. Marshall guys help please.

I felt like maybe the electra dyne was not as high gain but was really simple to dial in and use and sounded really good and seem to be in the price range

On it's own maybe not, but Hi mode with a clean boost absolutely. The Electra Dyne has become one of my favorite amps, I play it more than my MkV now and I haven't touched my JCM900 since I bought it.

Re: I Want a new amp. Marshall guys help please.

If you play metal 100% of the time, then you don't really need channel switching and such. The DSL fits the bill and used they are in the price range. Dial in the red channel and your set. Plenty of gain.

Do you play metal? Because the DSL's red (Ultra Gain) channel is wretched. it's quite widely known that the green channel is the DSL's bread and butter. Boost the green to get better results than the red alone.

I also wouldn't assume channel switching isn't needed for only playing metal. I also only play metal and have multiple channels setup for varying levels of gain, attack and eq depending on the guitar and pick up I'm using.

Re: I Want a new amp. Marshall guys help please.

I thought the DSL red channel was not what I wanted stock, but chinese el34s took some nasally qualities out of the mids and c19 mod put the brightness at useable levels and after that I thought it was pretty cool with the lead gain 2 around 3-4 and master volume around 5. Sounded very 80's metal to me, dunno it does maybe start to fall apart if you're looking to get really saturated. The JVM is better at really high gain with no pedals, it makes the DSL sound harsh and gritty to me. the 40/50W of both the DSL and JVM have a little spongey give to them, the 100W jvm I thought would be great for more punchy bass and hard hitting riffs, chugging, palm mutes.

so for me the DSL and to some extent the 50W JVM= 70s/80s/90s metal, but you need a boost pedal with the DSL
100W JVM= better for saturated metal tones that hit hard and maintain clarity even while downtuning and no boosts or extra anything required

I'm probably wrong and your probably right on this. Actually, I like the JVM more than the DSL even for the non metal stuff I usually play. To the OP, don't mind me.

Re: I Want a new amp. Marshall guys help please.

SO a bunch of comments...

The 900’s had a few different models. Iirc, the SLX is the only pure tube circuit.

Like myself - and we have similar tastes, the SL-X 900 is the one you want. I would vote for this as Marshall goes. I recently played a bunch of combos and hated them all. SL-X 50 watt head. Only.

I would suggest looking for a used Mesa Stilletto Deuce o
Hmmmmm.... Nnnnow I think I may want a Mesa!
The Stiletto is a great suggestion by Bill, and they go for really bargain deals.

Notice a trend here? My Mesa Stiletto is the most Marshall of all Marshalls I have played. And ultra-tweakable. VH? 100watt, Tube recto, Spongy, Fluid Gain. Brown as $h!t. Classic Crunch? Silicon recto, 50 watt, bold, crunch channel. AC/DC as pure as can be! I went to a store to buy a Marshal 2555 Silver Jubilee head, and ended up with the Mesa.

I would avoid medium gain amps like the Stiletto where you are going to have to boost them with a pedal to get closer to the tone you're after.

WTF are you talking about?

A decent Block 5150 or 6505 is a great idea. Combos and heads available.

Wow I've been learning a lot about amps!

Kinda leaning right now towards Marshall dsl, jvm, Peavey 6505+, or XXX. Maybe the Mesa dual if I can find one under 8bills that's not completely wrecked.

Re: I Want a new amp. Marshall guys help please.

Peavey JSX!...aka XXX 2
It's got a ton of shaping features like the XXL, but it's all tube like the XXX!
Anyone love it hate these amps?
From the YouTube demos and comparisons, it sounds as high gain as the XXX or the 6505...

Thoughts? They are only like 450 bucks!

Great amps. Bright, tight and thick all at the same time. Sounds kind of like a mix between a Recto and a Marshall. Crunch channel is as hot/hotter than most other amps lead channel. The lead channel is pure absolute liquid lava. Loop, floor noise eliminator (not a gate). Made in the USA.
It's a more refined, mature sounding XXX, with a few more options. Best of all, no dicking around with boost pedals here.
Bought mine new in 2004 and still have it. Turfed A LOT of amps in that time. JSX remains and won't be going anywhere anytime soon.

Might come down to these two.... Tomorrow my footpedal shows up fo my avt... If I can get good enough grind and functionality out if that Marshall, I may buy this Peavey, if not, I may buy this Marshall and sell my other one off.

Don't orpheo me and buy one of these ya bozos!

It was orpheo right? That guy that got his guitar bought out from under him? Or am I remembering that wrong?

That JSX has been modded so make sure you ask about that. (There shouldn't be that screw under the Peavey logo on the back and that toggle switch on the back with the "speaker off" label near Satriani's signature is not stock.
The footswitch cable is also not stock. It uses a 7 pin DIN connector so make sure they replaced it with the right one and that it works.
