Pine is one of those potential tonewoods that are rarely used and yet way cheaper and equally useable. Birch for instance is another.

If it sounds good, it sounds good. Even if it's made of plywood.

Some of these new Squiers look really impressive and a couple are just nice models that have been around for years. I'd be cautious of the cedar bodies, but that thinline Tele looks really sweet.

But for now, I'm good with my modded MIM standard and MIK Squier Tele which is really a P-90 Esquire.
