If you were to design a custom amp...

Re: If you were to design a custom amp...

My own amp design would be very basic. It would have around 15 watts, and a single 12" Celestion Alnico Blue speaker in it. The only controls would be a volume knob, and a tone knob.

bump. Doesn't anyone else want to share the specs of their dream amp?

Re: If you were to design a custom amp...

Well... It would be something like this:

100watts.
Switchable between 4xEL34s or 6L6GCs, or all 8 together.
12AX7s for the preamp.
It would be 4 channels, with 2 modes each.
Channel 1 A:
Would be like a Roland JC120 on clean.
B:
Fender Twin or Super Reverb clean.

Channel 2
A:
Would be a good old cranked 1987 or 1959 sound.
B:
JCM800 with hotrod option (Switchable).

Channel 3:
A:
MESA/Boogie Mark IIC+ drive channel.
B:
MESA Mark IV.

Channel 4:
A:
ENGL drive.
B:
5150III drive sound.

Reverb in the amp aswell. It would be 100% midi controlled, and sound best with Marshall cabs, as they are the best.

It would be able to save presets of each channel, with different EQs etc.

5band EQ like on old Mesas, and a Low/Low Mid/High Mid/Treble/Presence EQ system. And a Dry/Warm switch.
Also 4FX loops built in, 2 with line level and 2 with guitar level, hotplate would also be in it. Individual channel levels, and master volume.

It would also be made to be built into a rack.

That would be a COOL amp.

Re: If you were to design a custom amp...

1 EL34, 15W, pentode switch + some way to bring it down to 2W for bedroom practice.

2 12AX7. 2 gain stages, one triode is the driver, the fourth, dunno... Probably a gain boost. 1 stage before EQ, one after, the extra gain stage is after. There's also a clean boost by switching bias resistor on the first gain stage. And obviously a master volume.

4 band EQ (with low AND high mid pots), a gain pot for the second stage, a gain pot for the footswitchable stage, digital reverb, simple footswitchable parrallel effects loop. The extra gain stage is footswitchable, along with the clean boost. So I have a clean sound, a clean sound with extra stage, a clean boost on top of it. So clean, rythm, lead. Plus effects loop if I need modulation.

It's voiced for a rather neutral EQ, with not too much power but not too useless tone knobs. The reverb is light and smooth. Obviously, the sound should be Marshall inspired ;) There IS a presence control though so there's a feedback loop. Single input I think.

12'' speaker, something quite neutral but not boring. Probably some Celestion. In a not so small cab, but still portable. Obviously the output tranny is as big as it comes.

And yeah... I think too much about this stuff :( I actually think an amp like this could sell very well too. It's perfect for most player's needs.

Re: If you were to design a custom amp...

I'd be happy with a 3 channel amp.

Marshall Plexi cleans
Bogner Uberschall Rhythm
VHT CLX Leads

Obviously, it's EL34 based; half power switch; class A/B and dual Class switch; Triode and Pentode mode; series/parallel effects loop; presence for all three channels; depth/reso knob; and master volume for all three channels.

Man, that would be sweet.

Re: If you were to design a custom amp...

Well
Channel One: Non Top Boost Vox AC30
Channel Two: Top Boost Vox AC30 (with switchable eq like on the custom classic except with better range, switchable mid control
One assignable master volume that can be set to cover: either, both or neither channels
Channel Three: A cross between a mesa lonestar special dirt channel and a plexi (with same controls as lonestar special)

Output

One: 4 EL84's at 30 watts Class A
Two: 2 6l6's that can be swapped for El34 (like in mesa's) at 50 watts Class A/B
Both are switchable to run Single Ended Class A

Each preamp channel can be assigned to a different power section

Contains spring reverb (with one set of level and tone controls for the vox's and another for the mesa/plexi)
Contains vox style tremolo with depth and speed control.
One series effects loop

Added switchable gain stage before any of the preamps with volume control
Every switch (reverb, tremolo, effects loop, master volume, gain stage is true bypass)

Assignable to each preamp stage Silicon/Tube rectifier (choice of any combination of two or one rectifier).

It will be in head version with dual outputs and commonly run through an open back 212 with alnico blues.

Re: If you were to design a custom amp...

Howzabout four AT7s to run the pre and tone stack, and an AU7 for the reverb...into 4 6L6s with an after transformer Master...;)...turn the amp all the way up, set the volume on the attentuater, get a good OD pedal and have FUN.
