in need of a hotter neck pickup. (LP content)

so after dropping a gibson dirty fingers pickup in the bridge of my LP classic, I have found that the A2Pro i left in the neck in not hot enough to be paired with the DF. I need to find a hotter neck pickup that has similar tone to the A2Pro, just with more output (If there is one). I dont want to go with the '59 because I played one in my friends LP and it was WAY too dark and bassy. What I like about the A2Pro is that it has bass, but very little of it so it's not over powering. I like my neck pups a tadf on the brighter side. I dont play metal, just 80's hard rock and soft rock.....GN'R, Whitesnake, Van Halen type stuff.

thanks
chris

It is definatly a bright, medium output hb. Many say it's good for a brighter, more modern tone in the neck. I have a tb version in the bridge of my pv predator, and It is a good all around rock p/u, Imo. I may have to find a sh version of this to go in the neck slot of said pv, as the jazz is just meh.

what about the full shred? have you played one of them in the neck?

Nope, ain't tried that one. Said to be a hotter jazz type, IIrc.
My favorite by far has to be the Pearly gates, followed by the 59.
I have tried a aph with a-5, kind of like a 59, minus the bite. (smoother)
Maybe try a phat cat, or p-rails? I haven't tried either myself, but plan to put them on the list. Also, you could try a bridge model to get more oomph out of the neck slot. (hence the demon suggestion)

Re: in need of a hotter neck pickup. (LP content)

demons are good.
tried one in the neck of my LP with the stock A5 and it was big and bold, wasn't exactly what i was looking for in an LP neck slot; have tried it in several other spots since and it's now one of my favorites. awesome in an LP bridge slot btw...
i want to try one with an A2 mag in my LP neck, but my LP seems to have a very belligerent neck slot.
currently living in my tele's neck slot with a weakened A5 mag and 12 fillister screws.
get one.

for your reference, the stock 59n w/A5 was too bassy in mine too, but IMO the A2 is sweet...
demon could be a good option for you as an LP neck HB

or you could swap a stronger mag into your existing neck p/up. you sooo won't though ; ]

Re: in need of a hotter neck pickup. (LP content)

you still got the a2pro bridge? it's the most obvious thing to try if you do....

Re: in need of a hotter neck pickup. (LP content)

Depending on how hot you wanna go, I'd say PG if you wanna stay with lower output.
Or if you want a really hot neck pup, get a Dimarzio Norton, I used to use one in the bridge and it was amazing...

Re: in need of a hotter neck pickup. (LP content)

Second on the Norton in the neck. Very hot and big without being muddy.

I play one in an Explorer and really like what it does for the guitar.

Re: in need of a hotter neck pickup. (LP content)

Bingo! An A5 or ceramic will give it more output, and be a better match with the bridge. This should be your first move.

Do this! Also consider another Gibson pickup for the neck. In my experiences with mixing various Duncans and Dimarzios in the same guitars, I find that sticking to one manufacturer per guitar is a little more tried-and-true.

Re: in need of a hotter neck pickup. (LP content)

now.......does anyone have a step by step on how to swap magnets? I know its probably been brought up here a million times.

Re: in need of a hotter neck pickup. (LP content)

a polarity tester might come in handy, but you don't need it.

when swapping the mags:
the narrow ends and the top and bottom should repel, the sides should attract.
if you mess this up in a humbucker it's not usually a big deal, as there's usually only 1 mag in there; if you do get it backwards, it and your other p/up will be out of phase together but only when they're both at the same volume; the same effect as using green for hot instead of black (and using black as ground). IMO an LP is a good guitar to do this with, as you have a volume control for each p/up.

i don't have a hair-dryer and YMMV, but i heat up the p/up's baseplate at each end and in the middle with the solder iron to melt the wax again, push it all together and tighten the bobbin screws. you can usually tell when it's heated up (10 seconds max) as the baseplate gets shiny
