Instrument Cable Reccomendations

I assume this is the right room to post this. I'm looking to overhaul my guitar cable stash. I've got a mix of random crap I've acquired over the years. Most of the cables don't work that well except for my one Monster cable that I paid too much for years ago. Anyway I'm looking to start buying some new cables and was wondering what you guys recommend. I'm looking for excellent quality in craftsmanship and sound without emptying my 401k to pay for it. These are cables I want to use both at home practicing and in a performance setting without spending more than a fraction of a second grabbing a cable to go. I want universal-ness, not an assortment of the best tool for every specific scenario I run into. I want something that's worth the money, sounds good, and lasts an acceptable amount of time.

Anyway hopefully that makes sense. Thanks for the advice dudes!

Re: Instrument Cable Reccomendations

WHIRLWIND Cables. Best bang for buck around. Even their most top of the line cables won't break the bank and sound excellent.

Oh and they last for a extremely long time. My former guitar teacher has one and he's had it since the 80s I believe, I know it's a lot older then me thats for sure.

Re: Instrument Cable Reccomendations

if you can diy you can do Mogami 2524, but Whirlwind is A-OK in my book.

I use gold plugged Planet Waves cables. Awesome cables for the price.

Ill definitely check this out I'm very much a do it yourselfer and making some custom length cables could be helpful.

i did this, best move i made as far as overhauling the whole sound. went from all monster one day including pedal board, to all Mogami DIY the next, i DEF heard a difference, and usually my ears aren't so super detective of such things.

Re: Instrument Cable Reccomendations

honestly if you take care of your cables and they are not crap then they should last a long time. i have cables from high school that still work

I just picked up some Planet Waves Build it yourself cables which comes as a kit for a pedal board or you can get for your entire rig with a 50ft spool and straight and 90 angle ends. Jut cut , press on , screw the screw and your done. Very nice clean and easy.

here is a link.

I'm not sure if what I have is crap or not. I'm thinking so since I generally take good care of my cables. I will say though that before I learned about the natural coil that a cable has to it and how you should use that to wind them up, for years I did the cable wind method of holding it in your hand and wrapping around your elbow like a lot of people do with extension cords. So that may have something to do with it.

Re: Instrument Cable Reccomendations

Planet Waves American Stage. These are durable with gold plated tips that was "redesigned" to fit into some jacks better. These are also made in New York across the street from where D'Addario strings are made. USA made and they are not as expensive as Mogami and some others

Re: Instrument Cable Reccomendations

I've been using some Core One Bullet cables lately. Durable and detailed while not choking off the high end like Monsters. I got a 21' for less than $30, I think.

Re: Instrument Cable Reccomendations

Why is everyone listing cheap cables, isn't this the internet? One thing about the gold plated BS... when you leave one type of metal touching a different type of metal, science can happen... yep! I like to avoid gold plated since 99% of the jacks in all your gear are not gold plated.

Personally I am this close to investing in some Lava cables. Currently I have Monster Rock cables, and my board is wired with Mogami/Neutrik/Switchcraft cables that I built. Back to the Lava Cables, they're not too pricey, made in USA with top-quality parts, and a military veteran owns the company.

Re: Instrument Cable Reccomendations

I have one cable that never leaves home, just because it sounds perfect and I don't want to abuse it.
Colossal Cable. http://www.colossalcable.com/

Besides that, I still rely on Monster Cables, since they seem to have lasted perfectly. The rest aren't bad.

The Colossal cable is similar in quality to Lava and Mogami, so it's the one I use the most. The owner of Colossal is a Bogner employee, so all the guys at Bogner and 65 Amps up the street all use them.

Van_Damme_Cable_2.jpg

VAN DAMME PRO INSTRUMENT CABLE (sold by the meter) + Neutrik NP2X connectors.

I've been using them for over a year. Never tried anything that sounded better..very open, punchy, clear & detailed (but not harsh) without loosing any fat, bottom end chunck. At under $2.50 a metre it's a hell of a deal.

Re: Instrument Cable Reccomendations

You're going to get a ton of different opinions. The way I view cables it that I have absolutely ZERO patience to mess with or find a cable problem in my rig. So I just pay for something like Monster or equivalent. I've had Monster for almost 10 years connecting my rack and all my guitars and not one cable has ever gone bad. Ever. Granted, I don't gig, but I do play a lot and the cables get stepped on, rolled over, etc.

For my pedal board I tried Planet Waves and they've been fine too. I bought some longer Planet Waves as well to connect my pedals to my effects loop, and amp and they seem pretty good. Let's see if they last like Monster. I had used cheaper cables in the past to connect pedals and my rig and BLECH. No thanks. I just don't want to deal with it.

This are the PWs I used for my board:

And these are the longer ones I bought.

They seem pretty good so far. Cheaper than Monster or other higher end brands but a bit more expensive than the really cheap stuff. Quality seems good so far, but I can't quite say how much abuse they'd take or how they would last over the long haul.
