Is the G12T-75 any good?

yes, I am in a speaker mood today. It was following my wee hunt on info about my 8080 valvestate from the 90's.

There was a guy on Harmony central saying that he changed the speaker for a Vintage 30, and the tone got a lot sweeter.

The guy was also saying that the 8080 stock was only good for metal, which is completely rubish, but it got me wondering about speakers.

So what is the consensus about the G12T-75? I got virtually no experience with different speakers and would liek to know a wee bit more. So I am turning towards my SD forum bro...

Re: Is the G12T-75 any good?

I'm not a fan to be honest. Its too quiet, too mellow, too scoopy for me. Depends what you're goin for though.

Re: Is the G12T-75 any good?

Well, I hate mine to be honest, maybe it will be better with Mass-lite but they really "hide" my Laney's mojo, when I tried it out from the guy I bought it he used some boutique 2X12s and Laney sounded awesome, with my JCM900 cab its .. just ... blah .... They are scoopy, almost ice picky, now I hear a lot of Hair Metal guys like them, so I guess if you are into early-mid eighties L.A. tone you could dig it, but I am into modern Iommi type tone when it comes to pick harmonics, palm mutes, open chords and into Uli Roth/Blackmore/YJM type a lead tones for my neck single coils and Chriss Oliva/Lynch bridge bucker leads typa tone textures, and I am missing a lot of mids complexity, they are definately a seller, I keep hearing that V30 could be it for me or something similar from Eminence. My five cents.

I like mine. Sounds great with my 800 and 900. The mids are pulled back. But they are there. There is great bass and the top end cuts well. To each his own. Celstion sells tons of these so they are not crap. What are you looking for? Many 80's metal sounds and early 90's metal sounds were made using these.

Re: Is the G12T-75 any good?

I love mine, VERY versatile. They are a bit scooped and can be a bit harsh sometimes, but you got to adjust your amp to compliment your speakers, your same settings won't sound good on every speaker.

I like em, it depends what kinda tone your going for.

Re: Is the G12T-75 any good?

The current trend is to bash the 75s but it just depends what you like. They're really not as bad as a lot of people say and they do have some great qualities. You will certainly never have to worry about the high end getting through to the front! True, the mids are a bit in the background so if you like pronounced mids, the '75s are probably not for you. I'm planning to mix a pair of '75s and Emi Governors in a 4x12 cab to see how they work together...

Re: Is the G12T-75 any good?

I don't really know. It is fairly versatile indeed in my Marshall. As I said in a previous thread I as actually surprised as how good it sounded to my ears these days.

But somehow it feels like I could get something I could like a lot better. I am mainly in 70's rock, but I got the laney to cover this... having said that I like the slight fuzz I get from the Marshall... works as well. I think I will need some time to compare both amp actually and hear through recordings the differences. I would like to have something allowing me to go from 70's ZZ Top to 90's Alice in Chains... I think it is not doing too bad... Also, I need to try with the Gibson which is still missing its wiring for now.

I don't know... Maybe some more opinions form you all on the issue could help me make my mind.

Re: Is the G12T-75 any good?

I've been bashing the G12T75 for at least ten years. I hate them. They have virtually no midrange, and brittle highs to my ears. They are very scooped in a 4x12. They sound pretty sterile tonewise compared to most other Celestion speakers, in my opinion. They work better in a 2x12 or a 1x12, than in a 4x12.

Re: Is the G12T-75 any good?

For '70s classic rock, you MUST at least give greenbacks a chance. I'm mainly into classic rock as well and the greenies are my favorite speaker by far. As soon as I tried them the first time, I was instantly in love. I have an older Marshall 4x12 with them and it's just :headbang:

Re: Is the G12T-75 any good?

75s are just too thin sounding to me. Not so much that there isn't bass, but that there isn't any body to the tone. I attribute this to lack of mids.

The T75s have alot of sizzle, and will make your sound very raw. Try the eminence manowar instead and see if you like that. With the 8080 it will sound good no matter what, its a pretty good hybrid amp, just reacts differently than tubes.

Re: Is the G12T-75 any good?

You really have three main speaker sound types; the V30, the 75, and the Greenback. They all have their purpose. It depends so much on the amp that its difficult to say which is "better". I have a few Mesas, and the V30 works best to my ears. I also have a 4x12 with two V30 and two 75s, and that is a great mix for the best of both worlds.

75s have a good dose of high end response with a tight low end
V30 are fat with an upper mid spike
Greenbacks are known for their smooth breakup.

Re: Is the G12T-75 any good?

Thanks a lot for the feedback.

It is true that if this speaker was used a lot for 80's hairdo rock, it must be pretty sterile. I am getting all excited now, how much more better this amp could sound.

From your little sum-up Binnerscot, it seems the V30 is closer to what I would be looking for with the 8080, while a 10" equivalent of the greenback could be nice for the LC15.

Seems like a pattern taking shape here.

Re: Is the G12T-75 any good?

Yes it's a good speaker, if it's the sound your looking for. A little more modern sounding.

Re: Is the G12T-75 any good?

VERY modern sounding to me...very scooped and they have a real buzzy high end...I will also add that I have heard VERY few recordings of a G12-75T that had a good sound on tape, plus they get lost in the mix for live playing...no good to me.

Re: Is the G12T-75 any good?

As I said before...got to adjust your amp to your speakers. Mine cut through VERY well live, although I will admit when I first got them I did tend to get lost sometimes in the mix at band practice. I DO agree they can have a harsh high end and thats the only complaint I got with mine.

Re: Is the G12T-75 any good?

This roughly goes in the same way as my own findings. I am just setting the 3-band EQ of the amp with lots of mid, nearly as much low, and high around half way.

Re: Is the G12T-75 any good?

plus they get lost in the mix for live playing...

I played a gig on Saturday using my newly acquired JCM800 2x12 cab with G12T-75s. I thought it was sounding pretty good, but half way through the first set the bass player yelled at me that he couldn't hear my solos. The previous weekend we played a gig where I used the same guitar, amp and pedals, but my Jubilee 2x12 cab that has a V30 and a G12H. No complaints about not hearing the solos at that gig! I'll probably be changing the speakers in the new cab....
