Is there an ultimate tube screamer?

Hey guys,

I have been searching a lot for the ultimate tube screamer pedal, mostly all tube screamers suffer from the bass/bottom end cut/loosing issue ,lets say maxon {od808(too much bass cut) , od9(harsh) , od9 pro+(very compressed), and maxon is even better than ibanez ones, the only one that really kept the bottom with slight effect is the od820 but it still affect it, i have read on the Way huge green rhino which has a 100HZ knob to adjust the bass response, but does it act like real tube screamers( endless sustain with clarity and controlled natural tone feedback) or it is just an overdrive that will color the tone, also maxon has the Super Tube Screamer ST-9 pro plus, is this one the ultimate tube screamer i am looking for? it has a low boost mode switch, will this switch solve the problem of normal tube screamers ( bass, bottom end cut?)

I need your recommendation for the ultimate tube screamer i am looking for.

Also i tried the Xotic BB plus, it is not a ts in any way, i did not like it at all.

My amp is an ENGL fireball100.

recommendations guys.

The Green Rhino does exactly what you're hoping it does. It's like a Tube Screamer that's fatter, bigger bottom, and amazing sustain when run into an overdriven amp.

I'm thinking the new MXR Custom Badass Modified Overdrive may be like a less thick sounding Green Rhino.

have you tried it yourself? is it transparent enough to make the notes separated when play a whole chord on the gain channel.

fulltone fulldrive II mosfet
it addresses all the stuff you are talking about and gives you a heap of options for tailoring the drive to match different amps.

Just listened to the proguitarshop demo, it is too compressed for my taste and my amp ENGL fireball 100.

Any suggestions guys, till now the Green Rhino wins, just curious about the Maxon Super Tube Screamer ST-9 pro plus.

Re: Is there an ultimate tube screamer?

you cant base anything on mp3 videos on the net. :14:
try one out (preferably next to the bst tube screamer you can find and preferably thru your own amp) and see if you still think the same way. Especially in mosfet mode its the opposite to compressed....and you can even bypass the clipping circuit. Try one out...thats all you need to do - try our a rhino too while you are at it.

Taken into my consideration, any other recommendations guys?

Re: Is there an ultimate tube screamer?

Fulltone Fulldrive II is a good one, but an offshoot of the Boss SD-1. I've got an older flat mids one. Lots of options as Gibson175 said.

An easy to get TS Type is the Suhr Shiba. Its small, sounds good and can take 18V if you want.

Re: Is there an ultimate tube screamer?

Check out the BYOC OD II. If you're not into building pedals then I'm sure someone around here will do it for you. I love mine, and there are a number of mods to make it the way you want it.

Re: Is there an ultimate tube screamer?

Thank you guys, seems that i have to try the pedals by ears as the setup will differ from the guitar-pickup-cabinet. even the tubes :) thanks again \m/

+1

Run it at 18v and that compression issue will be taken care of. I love mine.

Re: Is there an ultimate tube screamer?

The TS808 is the best TS pedal out there IMHO. They do a really good job & the sound very organic & natural.

I also have a MXR Classic Overdrive. I use this with my Deluxe Reverb & last week I used it with a Blues Jr. The MXR doesn't drop the bass out like a lot of TS does. I am very happy with the MXR with my amps that I use. But another option you have is to buy a TS9 then mod it. Get rid of the tone hump & improve the bass cklipping. John Spina (StratDeluxer97) did this on my TS9 & since he has modded it I have never taken it off my board. It works great and sounds great.

Re: Is there an ultimate tube screamer?

I Like the regular ole Ibanez Tube Screamers that I tweak for myself..Thanks for the nice plug again Dave! Lol

Re: Is there an ultimate tube screamer?

All tube screamers color the amp. They really are not transparant at all. That mid hump and bass cut are what makes them sound great... Live. Once I started really playing with a band live, the added bass in a lot of the previous od's I had made me get lost and muddy listening to live recordings.

I use a fulldrive 2 mosfet and it may as well be hardwired to mosfet and vintage (i.e. mid hump and bass cut).
