Is there such a thing as having too many guitars?

Re: Is there such a thing as having too many guitars?

X+1

But in all seriousness, the only limits I see are:
-Financial (be able to afford them)
-Space (be able to store them)
-Opportunity Cost (Could you sell, and get something you like better?)

It's that last one that I wrestle with. Would I be happier with fewer, nicer guitars? Would I be happier with additional, more varied guitars? Would I be happier with just a couple guitars, one each of a few styles and more amps? Would I be happier with fewer pedals and more guitars/amps? (That is a yes right now....)

Re: Is there such a thing as having too many guitars?

I was thinking on this same line.

One main guitar with standard tuning.
One backup to take to practice or around, in case something happens to it
One with half-step down
One in double drop D
One with a tremolo

The hot, vintage and other pickups more or less get sorted out "automatically" into those guitars

A number of years ago I had five guitars that more or less sounded similar and I found that I only ever played the best sounding one. The other four were completely redundant and the only time I used them was when I forced myself to. In hindsight, it was a giant waste of money.

I wound up selling four of them off and in an effort to change my ways committed to selecting guitars to fill a specific purpose. At first I tried keeping one or two in alternate tunings but found myself getting bored of that and returning them to standard.... and, once I returned them to standard I found some of them way too similar to what I already had and wound up selling them. It'd be different if I depended on those tunings for gigs, but as it is all I need is E and Drop D... and my Drop D guitar can serve as a backup for my E tuned guitar (and vice versa).

What I wanted was a Yin/Yang setup... a guitar with PAFs that did classic blues/rock thing and a guitar with high output pickups that did the hard rock/metal thing. Along the way I made some mistakes that I decided to get rid of, and I made some mistakes I decided to keep. IMO, it doesn't hurt to own a couple guitars that are completely different, even if they don't get used all that much.

For what it's worth, while I have Yin nailed down I'm still searching for the perfect Yang.

Can one have too many different spices in one's cupboard?

Re: Is there such a thing as having too many guitars?

This whole thread is a great read and good for reflecting. I feel I'm at the limits of too many guitars but, I don't have a family of my own yet, and I could afford to buy myself some nice toys...

Right now I'm at:
- Schecter fixed bridge all-around axe
- G&L trem-equipped strat-type
- Schecter 7-string, which I bought from a forum bro
- Kramer Focus 3000, beater Floyd, bought to fill a void
- Ibanez LP copy, also to fill a void
- EBMM JPX, my first real high-end investment
- Takamine steel string acoustic
- Conde Hermanos nylon flamenco

The two guitars that haven't had play time in awhile are the Kramer, and the Ibanez, but I'm always thinking "what if I need a fixed bridge in alternate tuning" or "what if I want to abuse the crap out of a whammy and not care if it gets beaten up?"

Such are the struggles of the reasonably well-off guitarist. My goal is to sell at least two of the electrics in favour of one quality fixed bridge guitar. Who knows when that'll happen.

Re: Is there such a thing as having too many guitars?

Yin is a PRS McCarty with 58/15 pickups. PAF output and super smooth. It does what I want out of a Les Paul without the rough edges or tuning issues. For whatever reason it really seems to suit my playing style and makes everything I want to do easier.

Yang... I haven't figured out yet. It's something that contrasts yet compliments the McCarty, but I can't quite put my finger on what I'm looking for beyond knowing it should probably be high output. Been through a number of guitars trying to find it, still searching for whatever it is I'm missing.

Currently, Yang is a PRS CE22 with Dragon 1s in it. I like this guitar a lot, but it hasn't ended my search and I still find myself looking at other guitars.

Thanks for reporting the spam...I got him out of here at 4am.

Re: Is there such a thing as having too many guitars?

I'm pretty much happy with my 3 six-strings. Would only need one 7-string. But perhaps I'm so modest because my main game is pedals and recording equipment at the moment.

Re: Is there such a thing as having too many guitars?

I've got a Les Paul Classic Antique and a parts Tele. I'd like to add a 7 string at some point, but I think I'd be relatively content with that for awhile. Maybe I'll eventually sell the Tele, but I know if I had more than three I'd never play a bunch of them. Even now I almost exclusively play the Les Paul.

So 3 is probably my limit.

No, it's called "having too little space",

I think this is the best answer so far. I currently own 4 and hope to reach 6 soon. And maybe sell 1-2 of the ones that I don’t play much.

Re: Is there such a thing as having too many guitars?

I've also realized that no matter how many guitars I add, I still end up playing about 3 of them 90% of the time. New "better" ones replace older ones, but I could probably get rid of 5 guitars and not notice.

Man, those stats don't apply, not even to think about starting a thread like this. (unless you live in an actual shoebox)

When you reach the number 24, then we can talk about it. ;)

I live in a flat in Zürich, does that count as a shoe-box?

Re: Is there such a thing as having too many guitars?

I have only two, maybe if I was richer, I would buy more. I have a bass and electric one. It seems to me that two are enough
good page with poe orbs https://odealo.com/games/path-of-exile
I am very interested in buying Orbs for the Path of Exile (PoE Orbs) and if you would like to sell me, I would like to buy it (buy exalted orbs)
If I do not buy at least 7 exalted orbs for 1 $, then I'm not as happy as I could be if I did it. I really like to play Poe and I am very happy and it makes me play MMO RPG on my own. It's best to buy poe orbs and exalted at trusted PoE Shops

I own about 5 electrics, and 3 acoustics. For someone who makes a living from music, that isn't too bad.

I have only three, but play two of them about 80% of the time. My double gig bag doesn't fit for a RR type of body, so the Jackson stays home most of the time :banghead:
