Is there such a thing as having too many guitars?

Re: Is there such a thing as having too many guitars?

Too many is when you know you have to stop and that you rarely play some of them for a long time. My collection :
Aria Strat, 1984 - heavily painted/modded/custom fb
Kramer 210, 1988
Carvin DC135, 1988
Ibanez ARZ800, 2012
Ibanez Univ 7-string UV70p, 2014
Yamaha APX-400 Acoustic

I fought hard the last month between modding my sunburst / rosewood Aria to white w maple fretboard and actually leaving this as is and getting a new lovely white / maple fb Roadhouse Fender strat...... I tried to beat my GAS, I don't know if I was right or wrong, I went with option A, now this Aria gets some use, but also I miss its original look. And I'd still love this roadhouse fender ...

That's a very common mistake people make. They settle for something less in order to save money. In the end, they do manage to save money but still long for that one they really want and are never 100% satisfied.

Well, I guess you just gotta live with that sucker dude.

By the way, 2018 is on the horizon, so another reason (for me) to get another guitar.

It depends. OTOH You get something that normally would go for retirement and give it new life. That's a definite plus. I love the sound of the Aria, honestly I can see no Pink Floyd, Dire Straits, Rainbow song that a fender strat can do better than mine. And there are two major plus'es to this :
1) You can mod it freely, without hesitations, smth you cannot do so light hearted with a more expensive instrument (pups, bridges, etc)
2) The fight against GAS, alone, is worth it. Our (Orthodox Christian) Church says that if we cant stop sinning, then at least we should try.

So yeah, my point is not money. My point is space and the whole notion of over consumption. In that respect, the fight against GAS was worth it.

Re: Is there such a thing as having too many guitars?

ive have up to 36 guitars at once over the years, im down to around 20 but there is no reason why i couldnt get down to 10. when you have 30+ guitars, they take up a ton of room. not to mention amps and pa gear and all the stuff that goes with them

Re: Is there such a thing as having too many guitars?

I'm definitely in the "have too many guitars" crowd. (30-something?!) Something that I never thought I'd say. But my situation is a little different than many. As a flea-market junkie and a tech, I constantly find cheapie "experimental" guitars that I can mess around with, without worrying about messing up a truly nice axe. The problem is, I fall in love with them and can't dump them.

Another thing is that I work closely with a local luthier and a couple of guitar shops in town that average, maybe one a year, of someone abandoning a guitar. (Usually a cheapie that wasn't worth the estimate or repair bill.) I get these ranging from free to dirt cheap.

Finally, I'm blessed with a loving wife who doesn't mind my hobby. She's bought me at least three or four nice axes over the years for either a birthday or Christmas. As a matter of fact, there just might be another one "under the tree", so to speak, this year.

But I really do want to thin the herd. Sell some cheapies, and trade up to something nicer. I'd still like to add one of the new Yamaha Revstars to my collection.

Re: Is there such a thing as having too many guitars?

So far the three candidates for my GAS and experiment with different tunings, wiring and pickups are:

2003 Epi Standard for 180CHF
2006 Epi Standard Plus Top? for 220CHF
2014? Epi Traditional Pro for 270CHF

The cheapest one has a missing pickguard, scratchy pots, and a loose jack plate, all of which I could fix myself pretty easily. The Plus Top I assume is a plus top because it has a very nice blue flamed top. And trad pro is almost new and comes with a bag and a strap.

Which one(s) would you choose?

They all have ****ty pickups anyway so pick the one that plays the best and you like the most visually. The only way to make cheap guitars sound fantastic is to add great pickups. Go with the slash set and use 300k or 500k pots. I prefer linear pots for...linear control. I have grown to love alnico 2 humbuckers that are slightly overwound. If you want more power at the expense of natural acoustic unplugged tone with less mids go with alnico 5 based humbuckers like the JB/Jazz or JB/59 bridge/neck.

I personally would use an a2 bridge and a5 neck. The slash or 78 bridge with a 59 neck. I don't care much for parallel humbucker wiring tone. The LP controls allow for lots of versatility.

BTW I was in Zurich and it's a beautiful city but very expensive. I paid the equivalent of $10 for a Grande drip coffee from Starbucks. German speaking Switzerland regions are the best.

Is it bad if you broke one hundred?

I have about 20 guitars myself but I'm trying to downsize since I don't have a lot of room to store them. I think 6 to 8 guitars is adequate for any guitar player.

Re: Is there such a thing as having too many guitars?

i guess that depends. if youre a session guy then i can see having a variety. if you are a sideman, same thing. you need to cover a lot of sonic ground and need to be able to give the "boss" what they want quickly. if you play in a variety of bands then maybe a bunch too... if ya gig a fair amount you want a backup for everything.

Re: Is there such a thing as having too many guitars?

I know this may come as a shock, but I have actually sold off more than I have bought this year. I have built a few, but those were mostly just parts sitting around.

Re: Is there such a thing as having too many guitars?

Too many? Can there be?

I'ma say no.

Actually, I kid.

Too many is when you run out of storage space, or run out of money.
