Is this nut slot acceptable?

Re: Is this nut slot acceptable?

I returned it for a repair. When I bend the string it gets out of tune because it moves to much in the slot.

Re: Is this nut slot acceptable?

Can someone post a PROPERLY CUT nut photo. How deep are all the strings supose sit and so on...

This seems right :

You want minimal depth, as long as the string cannot slip outside its slot. There are a bazilion guides out there, go search them.

Re: Is this nut slot acceptable?

Yeah, that first nut looks like some sloppy work.

Greekdude's example looks much better.

Re: Is this nut slot acceptable?

I thought this was another bikini/lingerie model thread

Nut slot shouldn't grip the string, it should cradle it, and should be angled towards the tuning post the string will go to.

Re: Is this nut slot acceptable?

Just got it back from the luthiere after changing the nut. E string is to wide yes?

Every single slot in that pic is borked (e too wide, a and d obviously too deep), and if I´m seeing it right the nut isn`t even profiled properly and actually sticks out past the fretboard... I would never take my guitar to that tech again, period. This is basic bread-and-butter stuff, god forbid he does a larger repair with the same level of craftsmanship and attention to detail, the repair of his repair will possibly cost more than the guitar....

THIS is a textbook example of a properly cut nut. Slots follow the strings travel direction, nut slots are profiled to allow back angle, nut is properly rounded off for comfort, espicially on teh fretboard side (ever cut yourself on a long slide down becasue if a hack nut that was still sharp on teh front? It hurts lilke ****), nut slots are more or less the perfect depth (could even be a bit deeper without any issues popping up).

Just under half the string diameter is deep enough, anything over 3/4 diameter is noticably too deep.

I have used this tech for many many years. I actually dont understand how he suddely has gotten so sloppy. He has always done great work. WTF

Re: Is this nut slot acceptable?

Sometimes guys just have a ****ty day...or maybe he's not good at slotting nuts? Go find out what TUSQ nut will fit your guitar...all you will need is some sandpaper to get the right height and maybe touch up the edges but you won't have to worry about it being cut properly, and sound great.
