Is this (pic) what is meant by a "vertical input" Marshall?

Is it a "vertical input" Marshall because the two inputs on the right hand side are "vertically" on top of each other, or am I totally confused???

I never quite figured out how to tell a vertical input from a horizontal input...just never looked into it :smack:

Re: Is this (pic) what is meant by a "vertical input" Marshall?

Yeah, and those JCM800's are built a little better than the horizontal input 800's.
With the Vertical, I think the circuit board was a little bigger, with larger tracers and components, and wires attached to female jacks. On the later 800's with horizontal inputs, the circuit board was smaller, and butted up against the chassis, with all the pots and jacks mounted to the board.

I'm not sure how many other differences there are, but JCM800 purchasers always prefer the one that's in your picture.

Yes, you're right.

If I remember correctly, the issue is that Marshall moved to mounting the input sockets on the PCB, which necessitated putting them horizontally, i.e. next to each other. If they're vertical (like that pic) they're not PCB mounted. I think that's the case anyway - could just be making this up!

Here is a pic to show you how a vertical Input is wired. The side by side jacks are PCB mounted.

Yeah, and most people feel that the NON-PCB mounted jacks are easier to work with if anything goes wrong.

Moreover, some of the HORIZONTAL input models have op amps (silicon chips) and a lot of other junk that makes them harder to work with. Guys like Scott SPLAWN tell me they won't even mod certain JCM800s because there is so much junk to deal with. The 2203/04 vertical inputs are preferred by most techs I have worked with.

I have one of the Verticle jack 800's... cool beasts!!! mine saddly has no vinyl on it.... kind of cool in an EVH kind of way i guess...

Re: Is this (pic) what is meant by a "vertical input" Marshall?

Does that mean the Marshall 2203 reissues are "better" ones?

Re: Is this (pic) what is meant by a "vertical input" Marshall?

I have a vert one and played a horizonal one. The verticla sounded better but I was biased since I already had the amp

best on the early "better ones".... but the later channel switching 800's were good too..... still quality tube Marshall amps, and i'd buy one if i could get my hands on one cheap.. 1986-89 era... but the early ones are what collectors want.. and i'm surprised the Canadian issued early 800's are not more collectable as they are minorly different

You can always spot a Canadian Marshall because they use metal toggle switches for power and standby, instead of the plastic rocker switches.
I've always wondered why, but I assume it's because their safety regulations require companies to use metal type power switches.

Re: Is this (pic) what is meant by a "vertical input" Marshall?

Nah, we just like to be different :)

Ya, in the Marshall worl alot of the older amps have "canadian versions" which is kinda cool actually, like when MArshall moved most tubes to 6550's (I beleive...jcm900 era) the Canadian ones still had EL34's.
