Is This Real Life? Is This Just Fantasy? (NGD YO!)

That was what I kept asking myself on the drive home last night after picking up this guitar for $500. I still can't believe it.

I took it home last night and strung it up, then played until half past one in the morning. This guitar is absolutely incredible. It's funny to me because the day I found this on Craigslist, the only reason I was looking was because I was thinking of how I wanted a floyd equipped guitar and I was looking for anything remotely shred-oriented. I've wanted a Music Man for years, ever since I played a 25th anniversary model at my local Guitar Center and fell in love in a minute.

I can't find a single thing that I don't like about this guitar. In my eyes, it's flawless. Cosmetically, it's a 9.5/10 - there's a small crack in the finish on the side and a pin sized dimple in the clear near the bridge, but other than that it's immaculate. I can't believe how good it looks, I can't stop staring it when I'm not playing it, and it's hard enough not to just play it all day. This guitar practically plays itself. I won't say that it's better than my old USA Parker, but it's without a doubt at the same level, just different.

This is the first guitar I've ever played where I have no desire to change anything on it whatsoever. The pickups sound incredible, and all of the components throughout the guitar are top quality. The volume and tone both have an extremely user-friendly taper, and between all of the different pickup combinations I can get a near infinite variety of tones. I really like how Steve had them wire the switch too. Starting from the neck, you have: Neck, Neck+Bridge, Middle, Middle+Bridge, and Bridge. The middle pickup is purposely set pretty far away from the strings, which makes it much lower output. It works very nicely, I'm thinking of trying it on my other HSH guitar. I also like that the single coil is moved towards the bridge, out of the way of my pick.

Now I want a D-Tuna lol

EDIT: Here's what the guitar looks like now. Transition bridge and 36th neck. The incredible flame top is also much more accurately capture in this picture.

The ONLY reason I don't hate you, right now, is because it has a Floyd.

Seriously though, that's a bad ass guitar, for an unbelievable price! Congratulations on your new guitar!

Early contender for next year's Super Strat category...

Complete steal, enjoy!

One neat little thing about the Gotoh Floyd is that is has locking studs to prevent play between the stud and insert when using the trem.

It's actually a Music Man Floyd, not a Gotoh.

I'm not much of a fan of the color, but I could easily live wth it for $500.

I'm slowly coming to terms with the fact that this guitar actually belongs to me, but I can't get over how incredibly this guitar plays. Playing quickly on this guitar is just so damn easy I can hardly comprehend it. I got to use it yesterday at band practice (only for one song, le sigh) and it was a mind blowing experience. I never knew playing guitar could be so effortless. One thing that contributed to that was the bridge - Floyd Roses are much more comfortable for me than any guitar bridge I've played. It fits the palm of my hand perfectly. Here are a few things I noticed that set this guitar apart from other "shredstick" types:

  • The 1 5/8" nut, which I have come to prefer far more than a 1 11/16", seems to be rather uncommon with FR-equipped guitars. I wonder why? It fits my hand so beautifully, and I can't imagine that I'm the only one.
  • The body fits me perfectly. I've heard a few people say that Music Man guitars are too small for them, but this model feels great to me. I've never picked up a Schecter, Ibanez, Jackson, Charvel, etc... that felt right for me like this did.
  • The extra contour at the neck joint makes this the most comfortable guitar I've ever played up in the highest region of the fretboard. That must have been anticipated due to how much this guitar invites the user to SHRED.
  • I love the fact that this is a HSH guitar but the single coil isn't between both of the humbuckers. It always gets in my way, but not on this guitar. In that respect, it feels far more like a HH guitar.

I can hardly put this guitar down. When I'm not playing it, I just stare at it. It's so beautiful I can hardly stand it. One of my favorite features of it is aesthetic. I love how they decided to implement the pickguard - in this case, it is used to get the middle pickup as close to the bridge as possible, closer than you'd get with mounting rings, and to let him set the height of the middle pickup lower than is regular. And instead of deal with the aesthetic mess that comes with showing off the wiring and inner workings of the guitar when it's routed like a Strat, they rear routed it. BRILLIANT

I wondered what'd happened after the original thread was closed :D

Good score!
