Is your action above below or average?

Re: Is your action above below or average?

Probably on the high side.

I try to avoid fret snarl and taking the edge of the attack with too low (local) action. Unless I am willing to do a fret level that often means I have to be a bit higher. Damn previous owners noodling out the cowboy position frets.

Or in other words, clarity is more important to me than low action.

Re: Is your action above below or average?

For me, the correct action is where I can strum chords and fret notes without buzzing. As my control has increased and my touch has become lighter I've started to be able to set my guitars up with medium-low action. For the longest time though my electrics played just like acoustics.

Re: Is your action above below or average?

My action with the ladies is just fine...
Never got a complaint from any of them, either!

Oh wait, the topic is about guitar action - It is setup per factory specifications, but with 11-52!

How did I miss this golden nugget?

Re: Is your action above below or average?

I tend to use slightly high action i like to be able to dig under a string when doing bends and if i decide to whack the strings hard i get sound not buzz off the frets.

+1. My style revolves around bending and requires a higher action. With practice you can develop speed on the high frets. Fret buzz is a tone killer.

Re: Is your action above below or average?

I run about medium action on my guitars. They're set so that a Kennedy half dollar just slips under the strings open at the 12th fret.

Re: Is your action above below or average?

I adjust the action at the 22th fret with 2.8mm for the high e and 3.5 for the low E, no fret buzz at all, low enough to play fast and allow my fingers to grip the strings and can go underneat when bending

I'd say that's pretty high.

Re: Is your action above below or average?

well the measure i posted was in milimeters not imperial, also took on the 22th fret

Re: Is your action above below or average?

Medium, never ultra low since I like to strangle the strings at times. On certain guitars, I may go slightly above medium, but never high.

Re: Is your action above below or average?

Low. When I started it was probably lower than average. I suspect in recent years that it has become more "average" based on the players I've encountered.

Re: Is your action above below or average?

Quite low. I started out as a jazz player, with a fairly light touch. It kind of sucks that when I hit a bit harder now it buzzes a bit, but on the other hand, I can't really help it; higher action feels awful to me.

That being said, I feel like im in a constant fight with my current strat, I can't get it with any decent level of action or give. It's just one problem after another. I'd love to take it to a tech but apparently a full setup here costs about 55 pounds, which is close to $100 Canadian which sucks. (I've never had a guitar professionally set up, I kind of want to.)

Re: Is your action above below or average?

All depends on what you're used to. For me, low actions are unplayable.

Definitely, this is all a 100% personal preference thing. Although I will also add that different guitars feel different, I've played some guitars with higher action that felt perfect, so even that I don't have a consistent view on.

Re: Is your action above below or average?

As low as I can get without unbearable buzz. It's pretty dependent on the radius of the fretboard though. I can get a lot lower on my LP than on my Strat.
