Re: I've always defended Gibson QC, now I got burned - Twice
Here's an example of Gibson corporte policy at work:
I was recently in the market for a resonator guitar. My brother has a Gibson Hound Dog that he loves, and I dig it a lot too, so I started looking into them. They were selling for $799 at MF, Amazon, Guitar Center, and everywhere else. Just a couple of weeks ago I was thinking about putting an order in, so I looked at MF again, but the Hound Dog was not listed on their site. Nor at Amazon, nor any other big online music store. I did a search through Gibson's confusing and lame website, and found about 10 dealers of their O.A.I. (Original Acoustic Instruments) line in the country. Curiously, all of the dealers' websites said Call For Price. I did, and the price for a Hound Dog at every single dealer is now $1071. I talked to a guy at Guitar Center about this, and he said that Gibson demanded that all dealers carry the full line of O.A.I. instruments. When some dealers balked at this (not every dealer has a high demand for banjos, mandolins, and Dobros), they pulled their dealer status. So now they just have a handful of dealers in the country. Oh, and they jacked the price up by 30%.
When a company is so arrogant in their policies that they will treat their customers and dealers with no respect and allow shoddy quality control on premium priced product because they are convinced that people will always buy their brand, they have lost me as a customer. What goes around comes around, and (though it may take a long time) I believe that this will catch up with Gibson. And when it does, hopefully then another party can buy the company and set it straight. I believe that one day the Juszkiewicz Gibson era will be mentioned in the same breath as the CBS Fender era.
I love the look of those Heritage 535s....
