Ive Got a 2 Guitar Problem

So I’ve got a SG and a Les Paul. I like both of them a lot and am having a hard time deciding which one should I spend the most time playing. The LP has a traditional 50s neck and the SG is a 60s slim taper. Should I focus on one primarily or play both equally?

This.

LP in standard with .10's, SG with .11's in C# standard like Iommi. He used .09's though, you may find them too floppy and it'll need a tweek on the truss rod.

Re: Ive Got a 2 Guitar Problem

Play whichever one results in more tail. I would say that based on rock star numbers, the LP will generate more tail. I don't think that Angus gets as much tail as Slash.

:lmao:

Re: Ive Got a 2 Guitar Problem

Glue both guitars together then you'll have yourself a double-neck guitar that will wow your fans.;)

Re: Ive Got a 2 Guitar Problem

Rotate between both so you don't get overly dependent on one type of guitar and neck. I've seen guys do this and they can't plant anything else, and pass up nice guitars.

Re: Ive Got a 2 Guitar Problem

I find that different guitars actually encourage me to play different things, which is another good reason to alternate. Strats make me want to play chord voicings/ partials on the high strings that Les Pauls just don't, for example.

I do something similar, but with how I set up my guitars:

Les Paul: Set of 12s in Eb, Always A2, A3, or UOA5 PAFs or A5 P90s.
ES-Same as Les Paul, but 11s in E.
SG-A5 pickups, high output in bridge. 11s in E.

I set up all my styles of guitar differently, but I won't bore you with every last model of guitar that I play.

True dat! Right now I'm mostly in strat mode, so I'm not as comfortable playing my LPs. When I'm in LP mode, my strats seem awkward. I've bounced around back and forth between the two body types for years. Lately, I've tried to get comfy on both at the same time.

Two different guitars is no problem, its a blessing. There are a TON of guitar players out there who play with only one nice guitar their entire lives. Play both and enjoy. But with regard to the LP, it will get you more tail and allow you to make money playing it. Picture this..... you're in a local band playing a local club. Climb on stage and flick the pickup selector into the down position. Now you're "Gettin' Paid" rocking the club out. Towards the end of the night, flick that pickup selector into the up position. Now you're "Gettin' Laid" by dripping out those sweet neck tones.

Re: Ive Got a 2 Guitar Problem

Don't get "stuck" playing one type. You'll miss out on so much fun. I've got over 50 guitars and play them all and really enjoy every single one. Some have thick necks, some have slim taper, some have soft "v" shape, some are asymmetric, etc. Most of the time I don't even notice the neck when I switch playing between different guitars.

Serious question... what kind of player are you? Rhythm? Lead shredder? I've always been more of a lead shredder. Yngwie was my guitar idol in the 80s. When I have guitars with chunky necks, invariably they don't get played near as much as the ones more comfortable for my smallish hands. You mentioned "slim taper" necks. Tom Anderson's slim taper necks are my favorite. I've had two of his Classics with that neck profile. I've also had one with his chunkier 60s Vibe profile, and whatever neck profile was on his Bulldog (LP) guitars. I wasn't near as comfortable on them (a big reason they're gone).

Some of the most toneful guitars that I've ever had, had chunky necks. But ultimately, I don't enjoy playing them as much. If I was mainly belting out Malcom Young or Neil Young tunes... then I may have been able to live with them. Or... I suppose that if my mitts were bigger the chunkier necks may have suited me more as well.

I'm basically a classic rock lead player, but do a lot of different types of music (inc blues, jazz, soft rock, hard rock, etc). I am definitely not a shredder.

I’m not a beginner but I know some riffs and pentatonic scales. I’m just learning enough tunes where maybe I can hook up with some other folks and play gigs in our town or small outdoor festivals.
