I've never found a Strat bridge pickup that I've liked...

They've always been way too bright and ice picky for me. I play a great variety of music (although I'm mainly a blues/blues rock guy) and I'm not into super hot humbuckers (I *hate* the hot rails). I'd like a true single coil pickup in the bridge. Suggestions?

There are actually a few different avenues to explore.

In the true strat single coil realm Alnico 2 pro. Try the flat polepiece version it has a slightly fatter sound. I was never a strat single fan till I got these pups.

Quarter Pound---it is like a P90 meets a Strat pup and they have a ugly little kid. It has less highs than regular singles and has more bass and low mids. I find mine in my tele are great for blues and blues rock.

A duckbucker will sound similiar to a single coil, but there is no exact substitute for a strat single.

I'd say try some APS-2's and a Twangbanger.

Or a set of Antiquity Texas Hots with the Texas Hot Custom bridge pickup.

I'd guess you don't like alnico 5 Strat pickups and would like the Alnico 2 pickups above better.

Less glass on top and more mids.

i think the hotter models might appeal to you. have you tried the hot or qp?
if you dont want to go as over the top then id stay with alnico II magnet pups like lew said

How about a tone control for the bridge pickup or the Fralin Blender Pot? Thanks to Lew for the tips on this!

If your strat lacks a bridge tone, you're unable to dial those highs out..

I like using the base plates that Lindy Fralin and Callaham sell; it gives a slight tele bridge vibe to your strat pickup.

But the other trick in my arsenal is a custom mid control I use for the middle position in my strats (attached below). With the knob down it is a mid cut control which is fairly neutral when set to 10. As you turn it down it can clean up your sound by removing some of the nasty midrange distortion. But when you pull up on the knob it becomes a mid-boost-cut control. "7" is supposedly neutral (it isn't!) but I like to set it to 10 to shave off some of the ice pickiness from my bridge pickups.

Some people have gotten good results by rewiring their tone pots so that one of them effects the bridge pickup and the other effects the neck and middle pickups. But I like having a mid control to further shape the sound.

Stratdeluxer has it right at least to start, get the blender pot from Lew and wire it for master tone/volume. Mix in some neck pickup or roll off the tone. Works great!!
