I`ve been listening to a lot of Jake E Lees old band Badlands . Anyone know what pickups he was using back then ? He had really raw sound but it was still pretty overdriven at times.

He used a JB throughout Badlands, with Ozzy it was a SD Allen Holdsworth model. That pickup is also quite similar to the JB from what I hear. Jakeelee.com has some good info on the man himself.

Re: Jake E Lee tone

Yeah. He used JB's in those Charvel's of his. Then again who didn't use a JB in the 80's.

Re: Jake E Lee tone

Don't forget that his single coils in the middle and neck were reverse slanted.

Re: Jake E Lee tone

Jake used old Charvels originally, which you can now get exact replicas made of by Wayne Charvel himself (Wayne Rock Legend). I have one and it nails the old Jake E Lee/Warren DiMartini tone excellently. Later he was using a signature ESP model. For the Badlands stuff, Jake was using a Budda 1/2 stack.

If you like Jake E Lee, check out the Rush tribute CD on Magna Carta, which he plays on, and definitely check out his solo album "A Fine Pink Mist".

Re: Jake E Lee tone

I saw Badlands live on several occasions and saw Jake with Ozzy once and he was using Marshalls all the times I saw him.
Badlands were awesome IMO, shame the didn't get the recognition they deserved.

A lot of his tone, is his unique guitars. They were strat style guitars with a short 24.75 scale. It sorta gave him a gibstrat tone. You could make one yourself by getting a special neck from warmoth that is a bit shorter.

Re: Jake E Lee tone

i always thought his sig esp was pretty cool. short scale strat with rev slant singles and a bucker, needed a rev headstock though :)

Re: Jake E Lee tone

according to the Email i got from him he always used a JB exclusivley in his strats from day one :)

Re: Jake E Lee tone

i have seen pictures of his white charvel (ozzy) with an allen holdsworth bridge pickup!! his tone in badlands is awesome!!!

Yeah, there was a guy who posted here who worked at SD and said that Jake has always used a JB. But I've seen it written many places that claim he used a prototype Holdsworth pickup.

Re: Jake E Lee tone

Thanks again, ShredDog, for burning me all those Jake CD's. I've been listening to that stuff in my truck for the past 2 weeks. I've been paying a lot of attention to his tone, and what the ingredients are for it. I'm not sure, but I hear a lot of JCM 800 and what sounds like Budda SD 30 or 80. One thing I like about his tone is how wide open and raw it sounds. His sound is articulate but has a lot of greasy grind on the low end. Maybe it's just me, but I don't care a lot for the sound of his guitars, themselves. I think his tone would work better with humbuckers into wood, not on a pickguard, but that's just my personal opinion. One thing I love about Jake E Lee is that his chord work is almost more recognizeable than his solos, which is a good thing, considering that most "guitar heros" are just the opposite.

Did you guys ever notice that Ray Gillen uses the phrase "my way" in almost every song? "Come my way" "Go my way" etc. LOL

I love his tone in Badlands, I listen to the albums at least a couple of times a month. Never gets old for me.

My favourite Gillen lyric is from Dusk:
'My brother John, loves the needle and the spoon
Cigarette hangs from his lips
Everybody thinks he's so crazy
But, he's really not that cool
I know the reason why ...'

Great stuff. I know, I know :offtopic: Couldn't help myself!

Anyway, It's a Marshall on the 1st Badlands and a Budda on Voodoo Highway and Dusk ...

Re: Jake E Lee tone

I believe the guy who worked at duncan and even more so jake himself who said he always used a JB :)

Re: Jake E Lee tone

the holdsworth is basically a jb with two sets of screw poles

I have yet to see jake use a pup like that? all his charvels have a regular looking pup? none have two rows of screws?
someone post a pic of his guitar with this pup then i will beleive

Re: Jake E Lee tone

He also used a hardtail Strat...not one with a vibrato. Without the vibrato a Strat starts to sound more like a Tele. As in: better!

Re: Jake E Lee tone

In the "Shot in the Dark" video, he's playing an SG Junior... but then again it's only a video. Maybe he just thought it looked cool. heheh.
