JB is a freakin GREAT pickup

Re: JB is a freakin GREAT pickup

I'll beat him too it!

I don't like the JB at all, despite what I used to think. Not tight enough in the low end, not quite aggressive enough, and not thick enough; Not to mention the mid spike....

Aggressiveness is debatable to me...I think it's plenty hot for what I play..but I'll give ya everything else, DSS..In a set/neck through guitar, at least. In a Strat, they sound pretty good with a Marshall and 250K pots. Mid spike is tamed a bit, not so brittle.

Re: JB is a freakin GREAT pickup

This is true... the best sounding JB I've heard was a trembucker (they're slightly hotter, by about 1k or so) in my old Jackson Dinky (alder bolt-on).

That said, the EMG 85 I replaced it with still kicked it's ass :D.

Re: JB is a freakin GREAT pickup

Abso-freakin'-lutely hate it in anything that resemples a Gibson in construction, but I think that it's OK, heck, even great, in a Fender style axe.

He must be sleeping. :D

The way I have the JB in my homemade strat it sounds pretty good. I'm using 500k volume and tone pots but a 0.47uf cap. It was just enough to make it sound warmer. I keep debating on whether to trade/sell it for a 59 or another Custom Custom or possibly a PG bridge though. Apparently nobody wants a zebra JB.

Worked for Gary Moore for sev years back in the late 80's. Charvel Strat copies, one EMG, and a OFR. Some of his best tones ever. About the only setup I actually like an Active pup in to boot.

Benjy nailed it:

Anything "Gibson": :gurmpy:

Anything "Fender" :)

For some reason I just knew that someone was going to say something like this. :D

That's what I'm leaning towards. I have a Little 59 in my Fender Strat and love it there so I know I'd like the full size 59 in my homemade strat. Then I'd also have to off my SSL-6 and get a SSL-1 because the SSL-6 is hotter than the 59. I'm changing it from dual humbuckers to 1 Hum, 1 Single, wired Lynch-style.

Re: JB is a freakin GREAT pickup

I love the JB but would sure love to try a hybred for my nitefly-
It splits perfectly with a crusiser for the 2 position quack and the bass is nice and tight- A great pup for everything from blues to classic rock-

But the fly is all maple and JB is a tad bright as a result- I can just barely roll off the treble and keep the guts of the sound-

But really would like a trem spcaed C5/JB hybred to see if I can keep the tight lows and superb split, but warm it up just a hair-

Hmm..what about an Alnico II pro? little smoother for leads and still cleans up stratty....

either would be a good match I'd think though.

Yeah, I thought about that one too. Either the SSL-1 or APS-1 would do for the single.

Re: JB is a freakin GREAT pickup

I dunno man...I don't really dig on Alnico V magnets...I'm more of a ceramic guy.

I have a JB in the bridge of my Les Paul, and I love it. The only thing I've liked more so far is the Burstbucker Pro in a LP standard I was testin out. JB sounds excellent, but the Pro just has a little bit more of that nice vintage crunch in it.

There was a time when I wasn't crazy about the BB Pro.

But, I agree - the Burstbucker Pro is awesome. So aggressive yet vintage.

He must be. Haven't heard any anti-JB statements in a few days....lol.

I just realized I put the wrong tone cap value in my post. It should be 0.047uf, not 0.47uf. Man, 0.47uf is too big.
