JB is driving me NUTS!

Re: JB is driving me NUTS!

G&L ASAT Deluxe...maple over mahogany, bolt neck, DF Vibrato, RW fingerboard, splittable '59n/JB....and 250K pots.

Works for me.

Re: JB is driving me NUTS!

For $11 and some change, get a roughcast A4 and an unoriented A5 from addictionFX http://addiction-fx.com/gallery1.htm
Put the A4 in the neck and the UOA5 in the bridge. I just did it in my mahogany Schecter and they sound great. I know blueman will say put a polished A4 in the neck, but I find the polished to be a bit too bright (it's what I put in mine and I'm going to switch it with a roughcast here in a bit). The UOA5 really opens up the JB, I think you will find that it gets rid of the shrillness and compression that you don't like. If you still don't like the combo after that, well, change them. But $11 vs. $130+, I'd give it a shot.

Re: JB is driving me NUTS!

Yeah, everything that could possibly have been suggested has already been suggested here. Hopefully the OP gives the JB/'59 a chance.

Re: JB is driving me NUTS!

Seriously, for the styles you suggested, get an aph-1 set and sell the pickups that are already installed on the guitar to minimize the cost.

Re: JB is driving me NUTS!

He doesn't like either one, especially the JB, which he's been very clear about. I don't know why anyone would keep pushing that on him. It's a poor choice for what he wants.

Re: JB is driving me NUTS!

Just to clarify...

I'm not trolling, why would I be trolling? I came here to get suggestions for pickup swap because I'm not satisfied with current ones.

Just another data point for OP: I've had the exact same issue. JB + '59 in an LP. Bridge super fat but with an inescapable dentist drill overtone. Neck overpoweringly bassy.

I say get reed of heem. A2pro set looks very nice.

It's a great set for what the OP wants. That bridge pickup covers a lot of ground, and the neck won't be boomy or thin in an LP.

Re: JB is driving me NUTS!

Let's just end this thread for the tenth time or so: find a set of A2P. They're what Slash used before he had a signature set.

Re: JB is driving me NUTS!

YOU'RE what Slash used before he had a signature set!

Re: JB is driving me NUTS!

Or just get some A2P from the custom shop. That's really all Slash had back then, some A2Ps they were hand made by artisans at a time when the lack of technological assistance put even more of a personal touch into each pickup. So many people here go on and on about the mojo of the pickups from the 80s...so get the next best thing and get MJ to make you a set...or better yet, ask her to make you a JB like she did on the production floor in the 80s and nobody would be whining like an old mule about the current production model....because it seems easier to do the than just dropping $5 on a RCA5. Stick this 8itchfe$t of a thread with a fork. It was done about 70 posts ago.

Re: JB is driving me NUTS!

It's all about styles of music.

The JB is for hot rod lead playing and intricate fast rhythm playing... it's a pickup that is less about it's sound than it's high octane performance.

It's strengths are that it has:

1). a smooth almost liquid lead tone. The rhythm tones are smooth too. One person's smooth is another person's "wet blanket" or "choked sound".
2). a singing lead tone that has been described as a saxophone, violin or female vocal... think of the backing vocals for "Gimme Shelter"
3). the right amount of output to resistance/ratio that gives it's iconic sonic combination of being compressed yet percussive and lively.

The singing lead has to be coaxed from the pickups like a wizard conjures a spell... it's not there for everyone and every combination of gear, but it's there for most players if they work at it.

So, if these things aren't needed, why play one? It doesn't make sense. The OP would LOVE a set of AII Pros or a Slash set (I would go Slash set personally).

Re: JB is driving me NUTS!

This tripe again?

1. The OP is unhappy with his pickups. So change them. The A2P set seems like a good recommendation and has been offered several times.
2. The generalizations regarding the JB from select "bad experiences" are silly at best. If you don't like it, don't use it. But don't try to convince the world that this is a universal issue.

I've only been a member here since 2000. So what:?::scratchch
