JTM45's might be the perfect single channel amps...

I mean, I know this is sort of a shameless plug, but sorry. I've been out there this afternoon for several hours, ear plugs in place, trying to kill Stratmans amp before he gets here tomorrow. That's the final test, after breaking them in gently for a week or so, I just pull out a les paul, put in the ear plugs and go balls to the wall for about 4 hours. I'm freaking a sweaty mess!

Maybe take out that presence pot and put in a reverb? ;)

Jeff Seal is currently adding reverb to my Franklin. I can't wait to have to write the check to him for that one. :) That's going to lead to reverb in anything Franklin related.

OK, he meant "non-channel-switching", Mr. Smarty Pants.

Having never played either, I'm wondering how a JTM45 compares to something like a blackface Super in the clean department. I have an old 2x6L6 Bogen PA that I'm going to convert, but I'm not sure what to. Cranked, I suspect I'd like the JTM45 better, but I'll never crank a 45 watt amp. How are its cleans when it's turned down? When I want it clean, would swapping one of the JTM's 12AX7's for an AT (ala tweed Bassman) clean it up, or can you get it clean with the volume controls alone?

Re: JTM45's might be the perfect single channel amps...

Inquiring minds want to know! :D

I think NMV non-switchers can clean up very well with volume controls. I've experienced this first hand. Same thing with pedals. Some distortion type pedals are incredible with certain NMV amps. Some aren't all that great. (mind you this is not advice because I don't have that much experience) My limited experience has been positive in this regard however and that is all I'm trying to impart.

Re: JTM45's might be the perfect single channel amps...

A JTM-45 has a very good clean tone but it doesn't stay clean very long. A Tweed Bassman doesn't use 12AT7's it uses 12AY7's which have even less gain, it would be cleanier but it would loose some punch and dynamics. Back to the clean JTM 45 tone, it's nice and almost chimey but those amps overdrive pretty quickly with a guitar loaded with buckers.

Re: JTM45's might be the perfect single channel amps...

my old JTM45 reissue acted the same as my current 18w hand wired clone. It doesn'tget a whole ot louder beyond the 6-6.5 range, but it gets dirty real quick. you clean it up with the guitar volume. The 18 will get dirty at 3-4 with the gutiar volume turned all the way up, but cleans up real nice below 6 on the strat.

Re: JTM45's might be the perfect single channel amps...

What would an invader in a bright magogany and ebony strat sound like cranked in a JTM-45?

Re: JTM45's might be the perfect single channel amps...

The silver face super that i had back in the day behaved more like a ridiculously loud deluxe than a twin when it came to breakup. It was fairly easy to get it to distort with my R7. A buddy of mine had a twin back in the day and he always used the preamp section of a cheap little amp and later a Ratt to overdrive it. The few times he cranked it up and got power tube distortion, we had to go out inot the hallway and close the door on the chord:chairfall Speakers never broke up because it had been retrofitted with 2 100w EV's before he bought it.

Re: JTM45's might be the perfect single channel amps...

Also, bridging the inputs on any 4 input Marshall gives you some new sounds to play with.....JTM45 is a lot more versatile than you would think.....by the way, i asked Marshall back when i got my RI if you could "channel switch" with an A/B box, and while the rep was embarrassed that they had not thought of that, he said that would work fine. Each channel has a volume control

Re: JTM45's might be the perfect single channel amps...

Don't know about the JTM45, but I know a certain Edana 45 that FRIGGIN ROCKS!!!!!!!!

It cleans up nicely, but for blues rock..........fuhgeddabouddittttt!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: JTM45's might be the perfect single channel amps...

Seems to have a lot of clean headroom to me for goodness sakes! Maybe those other ones are biased too hot? Having efficient ceramic speakers helps as well. I've been running mine through 2x12 ceramic cabs. Plenty loud enough for me before it starts breaking up.

Cleans are awesome.

Re: JTM45's might be the perfect single channel amps...

I am pretty picky about a clean tone...NO 50 (or less) watt amp has enough clean headroom if you are playing with buckers IMO...if I want a clean tone I want it to be clean...this is why I have a Fender Twin Reverb. As clean goes I guess a JTM-45 is ok but I would never buy one to use as a clean amp...that amp has one of the best crunch tones ever, and that's what I'd use it for!

Re: JTM45's might be the perfect single channel amps...

I think the JTM 45 sounds amazing
gorgeous top, nice break up esp with G12H30s and G12Ms
It is beautiful with pedals and reverb
I LOVE THE GZ34 and the feel it gives!

Re: JTM45's might be the perfect single channel amps...

I have been told that the ultimate clean amp is this Fender Dual Professional, but i don't think they make them anymore and when they did, it was priced about like a base model Kia:laugh2: Think of a VibroKing and add a few hundred bucks. You can, however, find Tone Master heads on Ebay for not so much scratch. One sold today for $800. The clean channel on thoseis supposed to be pure Twin/Showman and I recall that when i saw Joe Perry using them a few years back, the crucnh sound on channel 2 was pretty nasty.

Re: JTM45's might be the perfect single channel amps...

i ran my 90's JTM RI through a silverface Bandmaster cab with unidentified replacement speakers......they may have been PyleDrivers of all things:laugh2: It still made amazing crunchy noises. Best i have ever heard. Even outdid my blackface champ which sounded like a baby plexi when cranked....listen to Layla for examples of the ultimate parctice amp, IMHO.

Yeah, but my other amp is an 18 Watter clone, so I'm hoping a JTM45 would be a good match as the "clean" half of a dual-amp setup. Or, would shooting for more of a normal-channel-only Bandmaster be cleaner?

Re: JTM45's might be the perfect single channel amps...

When I get Evan's amp done, I'll be able to give a "clean headroom" comparison. 50 watts, 7581 power tubes. Big iron. I'm shooting for the most headroom a 50 watt amp has ever seen. We'll see how well I succeed. I've alread told Evan if he doesn't like it, I'll be happy to keep it. :)

Re: JTM45's might be the perfect single channel amps...

The idea of an 18 watter has always been kinda kiaboshed by me for lack of reverb.

...course with not playing out and having a 4 month old son in the house, playing at any volume is pretty kaiboshed...

Re: JTM45's might be the perfect single channel amps...

I know I love those amps. I am in a huge dilemna between Fender Bassman Ri and JTM45. even though they are similar (very very Similar), the marshall has a bit more balls. are the real differences in the power tubes?
