KEA's Guitar Building Thread

Re: KEA's Guitar Building Thread

New wood day!
Got an 8ft board 6" wide for necks, and a 14ft board 9" wide for bodies. African mahogany! Also, my paduak came in. So i made another multi lam neck:

Re: KEA's Guitar Building Thread

Hay KEA, that is some nice lookin lumber you got there. What type of glue do you typicality use? I've always used Titebond II, but with the last big glue up I did I used Titebond III. I was wanting something a little thinner so I would have a little more working time and to allow better squeeze out. I lambed up 5 layers for a body and used a vacuum clamping frame. What I didn't like about the Titebond III, was it stained the wood. Luckily it sanded away when I thickness sanded the body.

Re: KEA's Guitar Building Thread

JEC,
I use titebond 1. Honestly, in the guitar building world, it is extremely frowned upon to use II or III. Mainly because they are waterproof, and dont fully dry hard. They stay flexible, due to their waterproof properties.

There really isnt a reason to use anything but titebond I.

Neck blank glued up!

Progress on the other ones will happen soon. Been really busy with other things.

Re: KEA's Guitar Building Thread

Here is some more progress.
A rhoads body cut out, gluing up another blank for a new explorer, and another 7 ply neck.

Re: KEA's Guitar Building Thread

Thank you sir.
I have enough wood on hand to make probably 4 more.
Underneath the rhoads body, there is a great piece of figured maple i want to use, but its a little too warped. I will have to flatten it before i can use it.

Re: KEA's Guitar Building Thread

You're building a Rhoads style - you're officially my hero. Looking forward to seeing it completed!

:bigthumb:

One guitar that I really like is this one, as it has some things that I like more than Jacksons, like the control layout, rear routed, better upper fret access, and top mounted Floyd.

Anyway, I hope to add a Rhoads type to my harem one day, whether the Ibanez above (hard to find due to low production numbers) or a custom job.

Re: KEA's Guitar Building Thread

KEA,
I did not know that about Titebond II and III. I've met and known a lot of professional builders and repairmen, but to be honest I don't think we have ever talked much about glue. In the past I had always used #I. Not sure why I ever tried #II.

I mean, it will still work. But its not ideal. The flexibility it has will cause glue lines to show through finishes, things like that. Normal carpenters and other people like that sometimes use it. But in guitar building, I is the way to go.
