Kenny Wayne Shepherd STRAT

Re: Kenny Wayne Shepherd STRAT

or a YJM.

Yeah, the current YJM for sure. But prior models started with a vintage style body and neck. Scalloped fingerboard, railroad ties for frets, DMZ pickups is a pretty small list of changes on those, pretty much the same as a majority of the other sigs.

The Beck is as modern as the sig Strats get.

Re: Kenny Wayne Shepherd STRAT

The Beck strat is one of my fav's!!! wish i had one... the YJM and the Clapton's i enjoy also... but i'm more a modern strat lover so the Beck suits me fine

Re: Kenny Wayne Shepherd STRAT

I wouldn't mind having the neck off that KWS model- thick C, 12" radius, bone nut, and jumbos.

Thats a good price for all those non- standard options (also the graphtec saddles and "custom" pickups)
Exactly! An entire new neck is beyond what I would call an upgrade. I wish Fender had an option for a 12" Jumbo fret Am Std.

I don't care for the other John Mayer type pant jobs; but I'm a sucker for burst finishes.

Re: Kenny Wayne Shepherd STRAT

I never understood the appeal of 12" radius necks on Fenders. In theory, it sounds OK, but it's too flat for my taste. It's one reason the Eric Johnson strat feels stiffer than most other strats.
---------
edit - doh! I stand corrected JeffB! For some reason, I always thought Gibson had a 10" radius.

Where have you been? The Jeff Beck Strat is exactly that. It started out as the Strat Plus before Beck wanted his sig to be just like it.

Sorry let me rephrase....a sig strat that is affordable and different. Sorry!

I mean look at the JV...it's pretty much a '57 with bigger frets and meaner pickups...

Hell even my Tom D sig is basically a CBS with a one H pickguard and a hardtail (which is actually quite a jump compared to the other models...)

And since I'm on that...WE NEED AFFORDABLE SIG STRATS!! haha

Gibson has been doing a 12" radius since..well jeez..40 years at least. Its been noted by sev owners of vintage 50s Les Pauls and other guitars that their individual guitars may have a 9" or 10" radius neck as a "fluke", but Gibson has been doing 12" as standard since basically the late 1950s.

Good point. At the same time, I don't see the Beck Strat as totally unaffordable either. It would just take longer to save up for or move some gear to get the cash for one. The street price is $1599. Sure, that's more than double the JV and KWS but it's MIA rather than MIM.

Heck, I could upgrade my MIA Standard to JB specs for around $300. It just wouldn't have the contoured heel or rosewood board. I've got a LSR nut already. Hmmm, maybe after I land a new job and take care of a few other items, that could be a possibility.

Some of the sigs are vintage designs with some changes because the player likes those things. What we need to do is have a real Iron Maiden Sig Strat (or another one for that matter, I own one of the first ones). There should be two models....one with all Hot Rails, the other with a Super Distortion and 2 Texas Specials, both with Floyds, maple fingerboards, 10" radius, and a whole lotta attitude. :)

^ Fender Japan has a Dave Murray Replica I think...just like his '57 black one

Yeah, I've seen that one, but it's only available in Japan. I'm talking Fender USA. The Iron Maiden Strat I have came out in 2001 and was available in the USA before Fender stopped allowing Fender Japan guitars from being sold new in the USA. And there needs to be an Adrian Smith too.

Here's a pic of the Murray. Pretty cool.

Re: Kenny Wayne Shepherd STRAT

+1 on the Jeff beck strat only custom shop with a different color as i already have an olympic white strat just w/ a maple board. Then again i am not sure i would like the pups in the Beck.

Re: Kenny Wayne Shepherd STRAT

A heads up, they are now listed online for pre-ordering from Music123 and Musician's Friend!

Re: Kenny Wayne Shepherd STRAT

Why didn't they just use texas Specials in the KWS guitar? They would probably be closeest to what he used. Trying to cut costs? I wonder what they are likes specs and sound wise?

Re: Kenny Wayne Shepherd STRAT

They should have made the Dave Murray guitar like it currently is, with a pearloid pickguard and 3 hot rails.

Re: Kenny Wayne Shepherd STRAT

I'm still waiting for a Fender sig that isn't pretty much a 57 or 62 strat with some mods...

The older Blackmore Strat was quite a departure (set neck, conical scallops, no middle pickup at all), but yeah. I get a kick out of the 2009 Fender catalog. 50 pages of the same guitar.

Re: Kenny Wayne Shepherd STRAT

Signature Stratocasters and Les Pauls tend to fill me with an apathy that is unrivaled by even the most mundane ramblings of any A.M. radio talk show host. Money well wasted in both production and consumption.
