Lemon Oil for an Ebony Fretboard?

Re: Lemon Oil for an Ebony Fretboard?

Sheesh! I've been playing since before 1964 and working on guitars almost as long.

Lemon oil works just fine and I've never had it corrode frets or swell the fingerboard or any of that stuff.

I think theory is getting in the way of actual reality and first hand experience in some of these posts I've just read.

There may be better oils and faster penetrating conditioning products, but lemon oil has never harmed my guitars. Never.

I use it on my finest guitars with no issues whatsoever.

let your own oils condition the fretboard man!

you dont need all that extra ****. just keep your humidity level in check and keep your fretboard clean.

Re: Lemon Oil for an Ebony Fretboard?

I've been using Dunlop or Gibson lemon oil for years now without incident.

I apply it during string changes, but only when it looks necessary. I wipe off any excess and never had a problem.

I just tried this stuff called "Black Magic" found at Auto Zone. Its essentially a Plastic care product but te directions say it works on wood as well. None of my guiatrs are very valuable, so I tried it and it seems to really soak into the wood and leave it conditioned as opposed to Lemon oil which just lays on the surface. I'd use lemon oil on my SG though, cause its valuable.

Re: Lemon Oil for an Ebony Fretboard?

There is no such thing as "lemon oil", only mineral oil with lemon in it. Not only that, but lemon juice is acidic and will corrode the frets

We have had all this before.

REAL and pure lemon oil comes from the peel...not the juice (which is acidic)
Most comercial lemon oil is mineral with lemon added.
You should really try and get the real stuff! It's great.
Bore oil CAN be good, but it depends on the components.

I don't want to belabor my singular opinion, but I have yet to hear anyone say (errh, read on the internet) that Fret Doctor sucks.

It immediately stopped the heavy black dye on my Epi Iommi from continuosly leaving my fingertips blackened after a long play. I bought it used, so it's not as if the guitar was pulled out straight out of the box. Scott's Liquid Gold (a common petroleum based furniture polish) did not stop the blackened fingers, and just sat on the board like an oily film.

Guys, the thing I like about Fret Doctor, is the penetration is so complete, it leaves your guitar in the "sweet spot" that you want to feel after a string change. Oily fingers are not really a positive thing in anyone's idea of greatness.

I don't use Fret Doctor after every string change. I use it more like once a year. I could live without Fret Doctor, but it is the stuff best I have personally tried.
