Les Paul neck pickup for "fluid" tone?

Re: Les Paul neck pickup for "fluid" tone?

I've been wanting to get the Transition set lately, being marketed as sig set for Lukather seems to make not a lot of people go for them i guess. Not many reviews for them & the luke iii that they come in have an active circuit in it that seems to buffer the signal always, so getting an idea from vids is hard as well. I guess the illuminators are promising too, reviews seem positive as well.

Steve is a highly underrated player nowadays. He's incredible. I would have jumped on those too, but as much as I like him, I don't think I'm going for his tone, at least not in this particular guitar. Sure would like to have his '59 Les Paul though!

Has anyone mentioned the Air Norton neck yet? I love that pickup for all kinds of neck tones. It bridges modern and classic stuff very well.

From my experience the LiquiFire is a very versatile pickup. With the right guitar and rig it can help someone get Petrucci's tone, sure. However, this pickup should still shine for those with other gear and/or playing styles; and likely shine in different ways.

I haven't tried an Illuminator myself, but I would be surprised if it were any less versatile.

Air Norton

The LiquiFire is a refinement on that pickup and the Illuminator a refinement on the LiquiFire.

From what I gather from a few conversations with DiMarzio, there was significant improvement in low-end articulation in the LiquiFire over the Air Norton.

So then, how does the Illuminator compare to the LiquiFire, or to the Air Norton?

The Slash may not be tight enough for chords too- you can check out the Sentient, which would certainly be. It is an alnico V, so it does remain tight on chords. It is low enough output to do buttery, fluid lead work too.

59 with the tone knob on 3 does it for me in C# standard.

I just couldn't get along with the '59 when I had one. I do like the neck tone Dimebag had on "Walk" though, and I THINK that was either the '59 or a Dean pickup.

The Sentient does seem like an excellent pickup. I'm just afraid it might actually be TOO clear for me. Lol

Re: Les Paul neck pickup for "fluid" tone?

The Black Winter and Duncan Distortion Neck are probably a little better Seymour Duncan pickups for you than the Sentient, though I've liked the Sentient demos I've heard.

Re: Les Paul neck pickup for "fluid" tone?

Comparing the BW neck to the lifers I mentioned earlier, the lifers felt a bit clearer in the top end without being bright. Still very smooth and pretty and fluid, but I felt like each note rang out powerfully and clearly. Not bright by any means. To me that might be close to the difference in the sentient and BW. My inclination is to the clearer one, because it won't hide your fast runs. For reference, I look to Trey Anastasio for a lot of inspiration, but I prefer a smoothed out version of his tone.

Looking for square eggs, aren't you? You can always drape your speaker cab with a shabby old blanket if it's too in your face :nana:

Lol... Nah, I think the LiquiFire or Illuminator will do the job for me. It's hard to judge any of these pickups by mere descriptions honestly. That's the sticky thing about trying pickups. It's always a "semi-commitment". Haha

I don't know, as the EQ is flatter than most pickups. I don't know if it would sound that clear.

Re: Les Paul neck pickup for "fluid" tone?

Basically I want my bridge pickup to sound like a neck pickup and my neck pickup to sound like a pig farting in a mud puddle. Haha... I kid, I kid!

Re: Les Paul neck pickup for "fluid" tone?

It seems like a pretty simple answer.
If you want tighter and brighter than a A2PRO: get the Jazz
If you want tighter and brighter than a Jazz: Full Shred
