Re: Les Paul through Marshall
Many years ago, I heard a good friend of mine play in a local bowling alley dance with his Gibson Firefird, thru a 50 watt Marshall head with a Marshall 4x12 slanted cabinet. He was a really good and tasteful southern blues/rock guitarist and his band played a lot of ZZ Top and Allman brothers. He had the amp turned up only about 1/3 due to the sixe of the place....just to the point of mild distortion, and the tone and percussive tone of the Marshall was unlike anything I had ever heard, which was mostly Fender Supers and Twins. From that moment on, I have been a 100% Marshall fan. If all you've heard is a Marshall cranked wide open, then you really haven't heard one, in my opinion. The closest thing I've heard to his tone that night is some of Gibbon's Strat/Marshall tones on his early stuff, and Page's tone on the new Zepp live DVD and CD. It had a prominent mid/high sound to it that was just pure heaven tone wise. Just hearing it locally from someone I knew made more of an impression that a big star in a concert would.
