Re: Les Paul through Marshall

I say yes, but only for lead. For rock n roll rhythm, it's a semi into a Marshall :)

Re: Les Paul through Marshall

I prefer guitars with P90's, over the regular LP's, and I prefer Mesa amps. From the Blue Angel to the Recto, over a Marshall. That being said the LP>Marshall sound is something everyone needs a little of every now and then.

Re: Les Paul through Marshall

Many years ago, I heard a good friend of mine play in a local bowling alley dance with his Gibson Firefird, thru a 50 watt Marshall head with a Marshall 4x12 slanted cabinet. He was a really good and tasteful southern blues/rock guitarist and his band played a lot of ZZ Top and Allman brothers. He had the amp turned up only about 1/3 due to the sixe of the place....just to the point of mild distortion, and the tone and percussive tone of the Marshall was unlike anything I had ever heard, which was mostly Fender Supers and Twins. From that moment on, I have been a 100% Marshall fan. If all you've heard is a Marshall cranked wide open, then you really haven't heard one, in my opinion. The closest thing I've heard to his tone that night is some of Gibbon's Strat/Marshall tones on his early stuff, and Page's tone on the new Zepp live DVD and CD. It had a prominent mid/high sound to it that was just pure heaven tone wise. Just hearing it locally from someone I knew made more of an impression that a big star in a concert would.

Re: Les Paul through Marshall

As many have said, better than I will, its all subjective. I love that tone but its only one color. I like to have as full of a pallette as I can.

Re: Les Paul through Marshall

Marshalls kick, but I'd play through one with other guitars than just a regular PAF equipped Les Paul. THE rock tone for me, is a P90 equipped Les Paul through a Marshall JTM-45. Love the thick, crunchy and articulate tone and with a quality overdrive, it pushes the amp to singing lead territory.

Re: Les Paul through Marshall

If I had to pick only one guitar + amp combo to play for the rest of my life, it would be Fender early 60's Strat + Fender Hot Rod DeVille. You can get a hell of a lot of great tones out of that rig.

I would also be very happy with a semi-hollow + Fender Twin Reverb.

Les Pauls are overrated IMO. Maybe I've just never tried a really good one.

Re: Les Paul through Marshall

yes, lp->marshall has some great tones, but not my tones.
gimme a superstrat (or schecter c1 fr(what ever that would be called?) through a mesa (perferably f series) and im good

Re: Les Paul through Marshall

I love it, but it's not the most versatile of combos either. The Marshall Jubilees are my favorite amps of all time, and I love the sound of a LP with an A2P in the neck and something slightly hotter (maybe a PG or CC) in the bridge.

Re: Les Paul through Marshall

justin hawkins uses mesas live, but in the studio he sued a vintage marshall jcm 800 combo i believe.

Re: Les Paul through Marshall

i like my amps to do sweet cleans with reverb, and a gentle breakup like a fender strat or tele through a fender BF amp.

Re: Les Paul through Marshall

les paul through a vintage marshall that is. something like a late 60's 50 or a jtm45.
people say the LP>marshall combo is over used but I've honestly seen way more strat>fender combos. Not to rag on that sound, I love it, best clean sound. But when you see and hear it over and over at blues shows and festivals, you kind of crave something different.

But I'm diggin my les paul>orange combo right now, the more I mess with it the more I can get out of its simplicity!

Re: Les Paul through Marshall

When it comes to a LP I prefer P90's. My fav tone at the mo' is Strat/Marshall. I like the clarity and slight hollowness to the tone even when cranked. Plus there's no hiding your sloppy technique, as I find out every time I play!

Re: Les Paul through Marshall

I'm probably going to be stoned to death for saying this but...I REALLY DO HATE LES PAULS! From what I have experienced with them they are just to damn muddy in the bridge for me. But I would have to say something along maybe an Explorer or Flying V thorugh a Mesa Boogie or Marshall is the best ever! But Schecters are close behind in second!
