Les Paul's with Floyd rose?

What are peoples thoughts on them? I was at GC a few days ago and saw a traditional pro II Floyd rose model. Full body thickness regular neck joint. It was a pretty nice playing and sounding guitar. I am friends with the manager he said it was new for 2014. But something happened to production and that is the only one they have received in 6 months.
They weren't listed on the GC site and there's not much info on them on the net. Spec wise it had a 50's neck desert burst finish and a flame top the OFR stayed in tune perfectly. The rest of the specs were the same as the regular trad pro's. I wish it was a different color but I may just have to go back and get it.

Re: Les Paul's with Floyd rose?

I've played the Gibson Axcess and the Epi PlusTop Pro/FX. Different animals with different price points. Both get the job done. I definitely like the Axcess, but don't want the price.

My only comment would be to keep an eye on the collar for the Trem arm, as QC has been getting off over the past few years and it's not unheard of for the arms to never really tighten for more than one use. FR knows it, and instead of addressing the manufacture, they tell people about the Teflon tape trick...which never lasts more than a few uses for me. I just drop the $ and buy the old school screw-in arm that requires the wrench.

Other than that, the real question would have to do with what you think about the guitar?

Totally agree with this. I have al older MIG Original Floyd I got 10 years ago, and I have zero problems with the trem arm or collar. Every Floyd I've seen over the past 3 years- since Floyd started manufacturing the Korean made Floyds that are OEM on many guitars- have trem arms that don't tighten, the Teflon tape only works a few times, and even if you replace the collar with a german made collar you still have the same problem.

You know it, big man.

I dropped about $70 on some old school arms earlier this year. The guy at FR was like "meh, Teflon...blah, blah" and nothing about QC or warranty issues. Really disappointed. And you are spot on about the timeline of the drop in quality. The new style collars seem to still be alright on the German style and a few Koreans I have.

Re: Les Paul's with Floyd rose?

Thanks for the input guys. I am still going back and fourth on it. It's a nice guitar and with the full body thickness still has the thick lp tone. I am just not sure if I want my only guitar to have a floating trem. I do not have a lot of experience with them. At least it does have a German Floyd on it. But for the $2400 they want for it it should.

Re: Les Paul's with Floyd rose?

you can always put a trem stop on it. it will dive only, but will always stop at the zero point.

fairly non-invasive (2 small screws to mount in the trem cavity) and totally reversible.

I prefer the ones with 2 screw holes:

...for a little more peace of mind that the long channel that might slip:

Re: Les Paul's with Floyd rose?

I was going to suggest the same, but at work and Darth beat me to it. Floyd will give you more options. And sounds like the guitar is speaking to you.
When I bought my wine red lp, I wanted black. didnt like the red honestly.. But the guitar sounded and felt so good, I couldnt get over it. I went back and played it some more. to make things worse, between my first and second trip, the guitar got a couple of scuffs on it. Im Extremely picky about that and normally would have said I want a NEW one, but that one sounded just magical, so...

Re: Les Paul's with Floyd rose?

I use the first pictured trem stopper on my charvels. It works great. No warbly vibrato if you rest your hand on the bridge. Stays decently in tune if a string goes. Easier to change strings. Dive bombs nicely. Oh and you can add a D tuna.

Re: Les Paul's with Floyd rose?

that's the only reason I have one. I have a single guitar with a D-Tuna...which is actually a top mount. that top one with the 2 holes is the way to go. also, it shows a nut on there, which is almost a must-have to keep the 'stopper screw' thingy firmly in place

the tremol-no is another option, as it can be free or dive only or totally lock down. it has it's pros and cons.

Re: Les Paul's with Floyd rose?

beat me to it again Darth! dangit!!!

Speaking of kahler and les pauls... Id LOVE to have one of those les pauls that had the Kahler and the explorer headstock like aldo nova played.

back on topic, the trem stop with the 2 screws is more "permanent" isnt it? id think if you want to be able to disable it quickly, one screw would be the ticket so you can slide it back quick

Would be good for someone with a heavy pick attack that warps most Gibson scale stuff out of tune when they give it a good ol' wallop (like me).

Re: Les Paul's with Floyd rose?

I have owned a few giitars with kahlers I liked em. I actually like their design better than the floyd rose. But alas it is not an option. I wouldn't really be looking at it but my gold top is giving me problems. Even after having it worked on by a tech it wont stay in tune and keeps breaking strings close to the tuners. I am on my 4th set in less then 2 weeks.

Re: Les Paul's with Floyd rose?

Its happened on2 different strings. I thougjt about a burr but habent found one. The strings are breaking just slightly before the string gets to the post. And all of them have broke when I was loosening them not tightening.

Re: Les Paul's with Floyd rose?

I've seen string breakage resolved by things as simple as a good setup.

Lots of possibilities.

If you want an overly complicated and expensive piece of machining perfection that will never stay in tune and requires constant maintenance, absolutely. For me: no damned way.

The Kahler is a Tiger, an engineering marvel that had a nearly 50/50 ratio of being destroyed in combat vs by their own tank teams to avoid falling into enemy hands when they broke. The Floyd is a T-34, simple, effective, reliable.
