Less Harsh Distortion

About 4 months ago i buy a laney Ironheart 120W and haven't play with it long enough and recently I do. It has 3 channels clean rhytm and lead and the problem is the rhytm channel has a little harsh distortion to my liking while the lead has the distortion amount I want but with mid scooped a little so it doesn't sound open enough for playing chords/riff. So anyway to turn it less harsh? Will changing tubes (currently stock 6l6) or preamp do it?

Re: Less Harsh Distortion

Sure might! I've never had much success in altering the character of tube amps in any BIG way using tube swaps and biasing. I've certainly made an amp that wasn't inspiring me like it used to (with new tubes) with a re-bias and/or tube replacement. But in terms of altering the overall character of the drive and tone just with a tube swap... not so much. Maybe slightly differing flavors of steak... but not from steak to lobster. So what I'm saying is that it MIGHT benefit you... or you might find that you wasted your time and money. Only you can determine the value of any possible tube swap.

Re: Less Harsh Distortion

Well, you could try the tube swap thing. It does make a big difference in certain amps. If I were you, I'd spend the eighteen bucks on a Mullard RI and put it in V1. In amps I've tried it in, it smooths out the gritty highs and really pushes the mids. It's going to be hard to find something cheaper to try. It's also a very simple thing that anyone can do, so it won't require a tech or a lot of time.

Re: Less Harsh Distortion

Try swapping the first preamp tube if it is a 12AX7 for a 5751. It's lower gain and will give you a smoother more articulate high end in my experience.

Re: Less Harsh Distortion

Play with increased volume.

FYI I my amp has this watts control and I've try experimenting it from the lowest to 120 with the volume at the highest. the gain is usable pass 7 (2 o'clock) but below that it just not very open-sounding
