Re: Like my homemade JCM 800 50 watt?
That's some serious iron in there. Looks good. Did you build a 2204 circuit into a 4-hole chassis? I guess no one builds a dedicated 2-hole chassis for 2204 and 2203 builds. Not a criticism - it looks great.
What does your cabinet have in it? Looks like a big Cerwin Vega woofer; 12"? 15"? Is that a hi-fi speaker? PA? I've never seen a C-V guitar speaker. Also, do I see a couple midrange speakers up top? I'm going to guess that you did what I did when I built my first guitar cabinet 40-ish years ago, followed directions (and common wisdom) in a book about general speaker building. In my case, it was the Radio Shack book. Stereo speakers (and also full-range PA speakers) are different beasts than guitar cabs. Guitar cabs break all the rules; they aren't full-range, they are "too small" for their drivers, the layout of the drivers is not normal. They were designed originally by guys who didn't know the hi-fi rules, and wwere looking more for a way to handle massive amounts of power (like 100-watt Plexi heads) with low powered drivers (typical Celestions back then could only handle 20 or 25 watts), and it had to be portable. The result was the 4x12 cabinet, which was a disaster as far as hi-fi goes, but came to be what we guitar players think sounds right.
I think you'll find that your cabinet is a problem... it might sound okay out in the middle of the room where you can hear all the drivers. But on a stage or in the studio, where do you mic it? Down the road, you might want to change the baffle and make it a normal 2x12 or 2x10 cabinet.
However, I think your stack is a great first project. I wish my first had turned out half that good. Of course, my opinion is biased. Like you, I firmly believe that blue Marshalls sound best.
