lil dawg amps - GAS is building

Ok so amp wise I should be set. I've owned a Mesa lonestar and an Avatar JTM45 clone for several years and that I am 100% satisfied with. And then I stumbled onto this:

http://www.littledawgamps.com/tweed-deluxe/

I've always romanticized about the idea of having a vintage style tweed, plugging straight in, cranking up and riding the guitar volume all night. Read some great reviews of the amps and the owner, and now I feel the GAS building.

Have any of you had a chance to play/own one of these amps?

Re: lil dawg amps - GAS is building

a tweed deluxe is a fun little amp that (with the right speaker) is great for playing with a band. lots of tones available once you get to know how the controls interact

Re: lil dawg amps - GAS is building

Ben.( twilight Odyssey ) owns one. I'm sure he will chime in when he sees this.

Re: lil dawg amps - GAS is building

Agreed. Have one, and another on the way. :)

What would you like to know about it?

The fact that you are buying another one pretty much answers my "are you happy with yours?" question!

Both my existing amps are heads with separate cabs and I am interested in a grab and go combo, and have always wanted a vintage tweed style. My initial idea is to get a 25watter and use a powerbrake lite to attenuate to still get drive for lower volume situations, and running full open for louder venues. Would be playing blues and blues rock with a drummer, bassist and another guitarist. Rehearsals, bar gigs etc. Playing with a Strat and Les Paul.

What wattage is yours and how loud does it get before overdriving? I'd like to run it lightly overdriven and roll back the volume to clean up. What styles and situation do you use yours for? Any other info you think would be useful would be appreciated.

Thanks!

It sure does! Jim is a GREAT guy, super meticulous, and works FAST -- he sends progress pics as the amp is being built so you can see every step of the process. His whole deal is using classic designs and not skimping on the quality, but making them affordable for a gigging musician.

Due to my recording, playing, and gigging lifestyle, a combo is out of the question for me, so I still use heads and cabs; I had Jim make mine as a lunch box head. I, too, wanted to try a tweed style amp and see what the fuss was about. I'm very glad that I did so.

Sounds reasonable. I am an advocate of playing low wattage amps flat-out. When I gig, I use an ABY pedal and use two amps in tandem. I do have a 30W JMP clone from Bumbox, which I use to augment my lower wattage amps in a live situation. I usually just match the levels however, and then kick in the Bumbox when I am playing a solo.

Okay, I had Jim build me a Champ because I wanted less than 10W and a good pedal platform. Both inputs will get VERY loud with a sensitive speaker; the amp itself never really breaks up, but you can get a bit of hair on it when dimed ... I rely on using a speaker that breaks up early (Eminence Wizard for vintage square back Fane Crescendos in a Hiwatt 4x12). But when you kick it with pedals ... man, the amp sounds as mean/heavy as anything else out there. I will have an audio example below.
My next one is going to be a Deluxe because I always wanted one. :) I think the Champ set me back $700 with the options I wanted. The Deluxe head is about double that ...

I'd like to run it lightly overdriven and roll back the volume to clean up.
Me, too. :) But, I also kick it both ways -- I use pedals to push it and then roll back the volume for a kind of gritty clean ... I am not a fan of crystal clean guitar tones.

What styles and situation do you use yours for?
Situation-wise, I have used mine for everything: jams, TONS of recording sessions, and lots of gigs. Style-wise? It will do anything from country to metal ... no joke. Audio example coming up. :)

Not much other than to say I have had nothing but great experiences working with Jim. There is no 'catch' to what he does ... there is no 'building to a price point'.

And now, the clip. :D

The guitars on this song are my '62 Japanese RI Stratocaster with a Seymour Duncan SSL1 in the bridge going into the Champster with a z.vex SHO and Xotic BB Preamp in front of it. 'Clean' guitar is using a Catlinbread Naga Viper and Pigtronix Philosopher's Tone. Not sure if you will dig the music, but it does show the tonal range from the Champster. Speaker used on this one is the Eminence Wizard, mic is a Sennheiser e609 & SSL mic preamp.

Ben, you've got to be one of the most concise gear reviewers on the Internet.

Wow, that was such an awesome and helpful response. Much appreciated!!

The track sounded great, very melodic and unique. A lot went into composing that one I'm sure, great music. Really showcases the versatility of the amp beyond the expected bar room blues.

From what you explained it sounds like it doesn't really break up into power amp style overdrive, so would need to use my 805 OD to push it I'm guessing. I was thinking of Claptons Layla album and early Rolling Stones and was thinking the overdrive was from cranked tweed amps. The online clips on the website have some OD going on with the les Paul clip. I'm sure I could chat with Jim and figure out the right amp configuration for some amp based overdrive tones.

Thanks again. One of the most helpful forum posts I've ever seen.

Re: lil dawg amps - GAS is building

My pleasure. You will definitely get more grit using humbuckers -- I do. But I thought that clip was a good tonal example because the pickups used are very low output single coil, and like you said, the mix is a BIT more dense than a blues rock number. :)

Re: lil dawg amps - GAS is building

champs dont break up as much as a deluxe, the deluxe will get plenty dirty even with a strat

Re: lil dawg amps - GAS is building

ive done whole blues/rock gigs with my esquire into my celtic 5e3 with a g12h. if running one channel hot doesnt give you enough, you can jump the channels and have even more! the two volumes on a 5e3 are very interactive. i find if i am plugged into the bright channel setting the normal channel volume at 9 gives me the tone i want.

Sounds great. If I plan on playing bar gigs with drums, bass and another guitarist woul you recommend the traditional 12 watts, or to go for the 25watt option they offer? I am hoping for a nice lightly overdriven tone at full band volume, stepping on my 805 for leads and backing off the volume for cleaner parts. Hoping for some natural amp overdrive but with enough headroom not to be too saggy and compressed.

Thanks!

Re: lil dawg amps - GAS is building

volume depends a lot on speaker choice. the 5e3 is pretty saggy and compressed even when clean, its the nature of the beast. if you want less of that id get the 25w option. im not sure how that changes things though. if he only uses a larger output tranny then i bet itll be fairly similar, if he increases the voltages then that will change a lot. ive used a 5v4 recto tube in my 5e3 (which increases voltages, volume and reduces sag) and its a fun option. i usually just run the 5y3 though. if i need more clean headroom, i have plenty of other amps

Re: lil dawg amps - GAS is building

Ok......it's on order. Talked with Jim at lil dawg and the 12watt 5e3 tweed deluxe sounds ideal. Will provide a more detailed update when it arrives, and have to say that Jim has been great to work with. We had a lengthy phone call going over all the options and the tones and volumes I'm after, and several emails that really helped me finalize everything. Very patient and helpful. Also thanks for everyone's suggestions and advice. Getting excited for some tweedy goodness.

Re: lil dawg amps - GAS is building

I love his build progress pics. Looking forward to the clips. :)

Would love to know more about the build: transformers, cap upgrades, etc.
