Line 6 POD HD Series

Re: Line 6 POD HD Series

It's never fun telling people the top of the line stuff they bought in the past was good but not as good as the latest and greatest.. Line 6 should have a trade up program IMO though..

:smack:

By that logic, so should computer companies. (Although, I do have a trade in program for the computers I sell, but I have a small company. ;) )

When you're buying something electronic, you know that it will eventually get replaced by something better. What you're paying for is the features it has, not what it's replacement will have. If you bought it as an investment, you're the person that keeps money under the mattress and expects it to increase. :D

Just buy what you want, use it, and then replace it when it's time. It's not like the X3 lost ALL of it's value, I just sold my X3Live for $50 less than what I paid for it. Considering I had it for two years, I got my money's worth.

Here's the list of amps modeled, supposedly:

All of the PODHD include 16 HD amp models based on*
• Fender® Twin Reverb®
• Hiwatt® Custom 100 (DR103)
• Supro® S6616
• Gibson® EH-185
• Fender® Bassman®
• Fender® Blackface Deluxe Reverb®
• Divided by 13 JRT 9/15
• Dr. Z® Route 66
• Vox® AC-15
• Vox® AC-30 (Top Boost)
• Marshall® JTM-45 MkII
• Park 75
• Marshall® JCM-800 (2204)
• Bogner® Uberschall
• Mesa/Boogie® Dual Rectifier®
• ENGL® Fireball 100

Personally, I don't have an interest in a floor modeler at this time, but I do own POD Farm, so I'd like to see the updated models brought out as an update. (Considering I just bought POD Farm, I'd really like to see it as a FREE update. :D )

Re: Line 6 POD HD Series

^ That is a very cool and diverse set of amp models.

One of my main complaints with the Pod XT, although I loved mine, was that I didn't really need yet another flavour of high gain fizz, or yet another small combo model. I just wanted a dozen or so models that complemented each other well and were actually useful and well implemented.

Re: Line 6 POD HD Series

a park 75 - that's pretty wild. maybe they did a park in the past, I dunno, just caught my eye.

They dropped the Soldano SLO!

Re: Line 6 POD HD Series

Good list of amps- not much need for the last 3, but I'd get some use out of the rest.

Bottom line though is just how good it sounds-Line6 is EXTREMELY good at marketing- both in print as well as video/audio mediums- but they rarely deliver. They hyped the heck out of the "new" Spider IVs & Spidervalve MKIIs claiming they had the best processing and modelling they had done to date- as good as the top end X3, and Vetta amps. I gave a few of the spider IVs & a SVMKII a whirl about 6 weeks ago and found them to be little (or no) improvement over previous models. I even directly compared IIIs and IVs testing the same models and the difference was insignficant.

IOW- try before you buy.

Re: Line 6 POD HD Series

Heh, last 3 amp models I can see myself using the most :laugh2:
But I think I could actually find a use for all 16 though.
2204 would be nice for trying to cop some lower gainy RATM sounds.

Really, I found the spider-valves to be a pretty big improvement as far as sounding more realistic than flextone II and III (never tried a vetta so I can't compare it to that). That said, the problem I found with the spider valve is that only 3 or 4 of the voicings are usable.

Re: Line 6 POD HD Series

Surprised by the inclusion of ÷13 and Dr. Z, but think they're great additions.

Surprised by the omission of the SLO.

Not surprised but kinda bummed about the omission of any kind of Orange/Matamp/Electric model.

Of those, I'll probably just use the DR103, BFDR, and JCM 800 models with any regularity.

Still, if those models are really good, it'll make it worth it. The biggest test for me will be if the amp controls react appropriately. With previous Line6 models, their amps would kind of be decent approximations of the real thing at certain settings in certain environments, but the tapers and ranges of all the controls were all way way off.

The park & hiwatt is pretty rad... so are the supro & gibson. What gives me a glimmer of optimism is that its said to be a "ground up redesign" of how they sample/emulate the goods. I haven't seen anything but the HD is what it is, hi-def... maybe 96k?

I've always kinda dug the pods for anything BUT guitar. Cool for drums and vocals, keys... strings... general FX box. On guitar its cooler then a rockman, but still sorta lame.

Its still of more value to me as that, as a multi effects box... I really dig the "fx only" switch right on the front there. Bypass all the amp model stuff I guess? That and the regular old LCD display for patches. Good gravy!

Re: Line 6 POD HD Series

5 minutes in... not drinking the koolaid. The sam adams octoberfest, its ahhhright.

At 7:40 in PANIC!!!

Where's the effin' tuner???

I'm in 720p & whatever that display is... can't see it. Looks dead to me.

to be continued...

Look at the pics you posted on the first page.. the TAP button/switch says "Hold for Tuner". ;) (On the 300, it's the first switch on the left, on the 400 and 500, it's next to the expression pedal.)

Re: Line 6 POD HD Series

More info is available on the Line 6 website as of today. They also have their little movies highlighting the product available for viewing too. I am not sold by what I hear yet, but I need to try it in person before making the final determination.

Hope that helps,
Dan

I don't really agree with using a Variax to demo it with either.

Re: Line 6 POD HD Series

Between this and the Valspar HD house paint, I think we can officially declare that the term "HD" has lost absolutely all meaning.

EDIT: Oh, and don't forget those "HD Vision" sunglasses and "HD" radio...though at least with that last one, HD DOES mean something, even if it's not "High Definition" like everyone seems to think.
