Longest lasting pick material?

Re: Longest lasting pick material?

Really love the Dunlop Ultex Jazz III XLs. Just a bit larger than the standard Jazz IIIs. The Ultex is super durable--after several weeks of play, shows no edge wear. Bright, dynamic tone, and they stay put even with sweaty fingers. Sweetwater Music stocks a pack of 24 for 7.99.

Re: Longest lasting pick material?

I use Tortex. Ultex lasts longer but creates a weird chirping sound when it scrapes the strings that I don't like.

If you buy your picks in lots of 100 it doesn't really matter how long each pick lasts individually.

Re: Longest lasting pick material?

i use the green(.88mm) dunlop tortex picks out of all i have tried./.. they feel the best.. they dont last as long as id like but i like em

Re: Longest lasting pick material?

I like the .88mm Dunlop Nylon picks. I use those or custom blue pearloid medium picks.
It could just be the way I play, but I've never broken one of those Nylons, and I certainly haven't broken a pearloid in a really long time.

Sans-Pick

I never could keep up with a pick

so I learned just to play with my fingers

Bought a pack of 72 1.35 Tortex Jazz III's. I'm good on picks for a while. I keep the extras in an old Nautica watch box that I had laying around.

Re: Longest lasting pick material?

Paul Gilbert uses .60 Tortex picks. And Paul Gilbert has like the best picking in the world.
Yeah i used to use really thick picks but hated how they muddied up the tone and made it kind of woofy sounding. I always liked the feel of a thin pick but never used them. Then i read about PG saying that and i decided to get those orange tortex one's he plays to give them a try. I really love them. I like the way they feel as well. I detest heavy thick picks and couldn't use them now

I use those herco thumb/flatpicks sometimes but when i want to pick at shred type levels those just don't work.

Re: Longest lasting pick material?

Personally I use the ultex jazz 3. I used to use the dunlop big stubby 3mm, but ever since I got the jazz picks a few days ago, I haven't gone back. I'd be open to trying some of the thicker tortex picks at some point. I'm mostly a shredder, just not that fast yet. Also, I used only one big stubby 3mm for 6 months, and it still shows no sign of wear. That pick is what inspired me to start this thread.

If you haven't already, I would order some Ultex Jazz 3 2.0's. One of the best picks I've ever used. The Ultex Jazz III's are great, but the 2.0's feel amazing.

Re: Longest lasting pick material?

I use Dunlop Tortex .50mm - the red ones. (I know, nobody uses "thins" any more, but it's what I'm used to!) These have done well for me for many, many years, but I've never come across a thin pick that lasts a long time... I'm always wearing the point down to round. I've never considered stainless steel or carbon fiber... do they make 'em in thins?
Yes they do.

Re: Longest lasting pick material?

The medium to thin Fender Celluloid picks are the only ones that broke and wore out on me (besides a pick I can't remember the name of but had brushes/bristles taped to it that got a unique sound but wore out pretty quickly.) Other than that, all of my picks that I personally have used get lost before I can wear them out. lol

My personal favorite is Copper and Tusq but I also really like various wooden picks and some cool picks made from Vinyl records.

Re: Longest lasting pick material?

Can't speak for their longevity but, these Graphtech Tusq picks are great. Nice attack and feel in your hand.

I love these things, especially the "warm" 0.68's for guitar and the "bright" 1.0's for bass. They do wear quicker than Tortex though.

Re: Longest lasting pick material?

my ultex jazz iiis still look brand new after lots of playing but that's about the only reason i still have them... not the most enjoyable things to play with imo

I actually had never heard of these picks until a forum member mentioned then in another thread...I can't speak highly enough of these for both acoustic and electric. If you haven't tried them out yet then I would suggest you give them a swirl...they are awesome!
