Longest lasting pick material?

Re: Longest lasting pick material?

Can't speak for their longevity but, these Graphtech Tusq picks are great. Nice attack and feel in your hand.

This is the first I've heard of these. I see a few other members here like them, too. I'll have to give them a try.

If you play both acoustic and electric then I don't see how you could not love them–sound great on both!

Great. Looking forward to trying them. I've been using Fender heavy picks. I guess that would equate to a 1.00mm thickness on them.

Re: Longest lasting pick material?

I have no idea how people can get 3-4 weeks out of a plastic pick... I use Dunlop Ultex Jazz iiis almost exclusively now and I get maybe 30 minutes continuous play time before they start to go dull. And I don't use steel cable either - Dunlop power slinkys .11-.48 and more recently ghs nickel rockers .11-.50.

The only way I've gotten more life out of my picks is to learn chicken pickin. Otherwise they just don't last.

Curious about ss carbon fiber though.

Did I hear correctly that you go through a pick in 30 minutes?...

You're supposed to strike the string with the flat side of the pick, not the edge. :laugh2:

Re: Longest lasting pick material?

I just ordered some of the Tusq picks. Looking forward to giving them a try.

Yeah with my technique I hold the pick at an angle compared with the string - mine always wear on the neck-most edge of the downward facing part and the bridge-most edge up the upward facing part.

Does nobody play like this? I feel like it can't be that uncommon especially because it lets you keep your wrist straight while playing. Idk it always sounded more natural for me at least than keeping the pick parallel to the strings.

Would it be too much to ask to post pictures of your worn pics? Can't fathom that–at 30 mins a pic I'd go through so many pics in a week its not funny...

Re: Longest lasting pick material?

Not at all - I'll post some when I get home tonight.

I don't throw out the picks when they get worn down, I just keep using them until I lose them. I've never been good enough to sweep or speed pick so I just cheat with my fingers for string skipping and slow arpeggios lol.

But stay tuned I'll post some pics around 9:00 est of so

Sweet! Just wanna see where/how they are wearing out. I'm no speed/sweep picker either!

That would certainly explain it. I look forward to the photos of your pick, too.

Re: Longest lasting pick material?

A bit on the thick side, but I think these one will outlast me. Plus, you know, 'merica!

Even the flimsiest celluloid fender pick lasts me a week of (unenjoyable floppy) playing before being unusable

jazz IIIs i've never so much as left a mark on one. i have some that are several years old.

It would be interesting for some guitar mag to ask johnny hiland, malmsteen and a bunch of guys who play hard from different genres how long picks last them. My leads are very legato-based so the pick is really only used to get the strings rolling. Sounds like you're the opposite and really chomp at the notes?

Re: Longest lasting pick material?

i only pick with the pick parallel for the ultra heavy fast down picking, but i bend my thumb upwards for that, i'm also able to go through ultex in a jam, but these carbon fiber picks are sick, the first one i picked from the package 3 months ago is just starting to show some wear (quite minimal actually)

Re: Longest lasting pick material?

Not the easiest getting the photo - and pardon the crappy camera pic. But this is about how they look after a few days. It starts to get noticeable after about 30 minutes of playing, then gets a little worse for the next couple of days, then kind of levels off in terms of how noticeable the difference is day-to-day.
