Longest lasting pick material?

Re: Longest lasting pick material?

Wear is on both sides - harder to see in first picture but both are worn like that. I'll get a better picture of the other side when I get in tonight.

I play in a440 fwiw. Guitar is 25.5" scale (telecaster).

I can confirm, higher gauge strings wear out picks faster. I think because they have higher tension so the pick has to work harder to get through the string which creates more friction.

In reply to jimijames:
It's gotta be the 11 gauge strings. Since I've switched to 11s from 9s my picks wear down more quickly also.

I was wondering if string tension was the culprit–thought maybe you were tuned higher (I actually have done this on Acoustic to accommodate a singer's vocal range) than Standard 440.

Re: Longest lasting pick material?

The Tusq picks I ordered came today. I haven't had a lot of time with one yet, but my first impression comparing it to a Fender heavy and a Fender extra heavy, is that it seems smoother and easier to use. I expect these to be a real find. Time will tell more on that. Thanks to Ledzef, Demaniac and Treyhaislip for the introduction to these.

Re: Longest lasting pick material?

6 pages deep I found this thread again. I've used the Tusq picks for few weeks, now. I'm still a little unsure if they are may favorite, but more and more I find one in my hand instead of the Fenders. I just ordered some more, this time in warm and bright to see the differences.

Just now saw where you said they came in!

I absolutely love mine! I got the White, Parchment, and Grey which I believe are from Bright to Warm or Thin to Thick. Absolutely love them and have them in every guitar case. I would put them up there tied with my Copper and Vinyl (from old records) picks.

Glad you are using them alot, would hate to have recommended them to you and you hate 'em!

I must correct myself. I originally ordered 'warm' (parchment) in 1.0mm. The ones I just ordered are also 1.0mm but in 'deep' (grey) and 'bright' (white). It must have to do with the hardness of the material. I like a thicker pick, so probably won't try any thinner ones. Again, thanks for the recommendation.

Did you get one of those punches to cut your own out of the records?

Ah, I see! I use the Grey the most with the Acoustic and the White or Parchment more on the Electric. Love they way they respond.

Actually, I won a bunch of them on eBay from a dude in France. They sound amazing and feel really cool! I don't think you can punch them out...think you have to use a heat gun or something similar...could be wrong.

Thanks. I may have to try those one of these days.

Re: Longest lasting pick material?

Anybody ever tried Pickboy picks? They sent me a free assortment pack after I started following them on Twitter. It turns out that I really liked the Classic Pos-A-Grip in the 1 mm size. Wondering if anybody has any experience with how long they last?

Never heard of 'em...I'll look them up. (If I had a dollar for every pick...oh wait I spent $ for all of them! lol)

They had a pretty good assortment, and there are a couple more that I'll probably try after this first order comes in. Better hold onto that dollar… You'll need one for each pick! I'm used to buying Dunlops for $3 to $4 per dozen and these are $9 to $10 for ten.

Re: Longest lasting pick material?

Years back I had a copper pick, I think it was 0.68mm. It never seemed to wear. Eventually I lost it. I love the Graph Teck's tone, but they do wear quite a bit faster than most other picks. It took me a couple of months of hard playing to start rounding the tip of a yellow Dunlop Tortex. And that was on a bass with stainless strings.

I love my copper picks! I get them from Ice Pix and they definitely have not worn out! They had problems "walking away" when I helped out at the Youth Group at Church. lol

I just started seeing some wear on one of my Graph Tech pick (the white one which I think is the thinnest.)

Re: Longest lasting pick material?

Currently liking the Stiffo Jazz III. Last at least twice as long as the Nylon Jazz III, but both are way too slippery after using the Max Grip (which would just collect grime). Also looking into the Chicken Picks Badazz III, which better be good at $8 per pick.

Without going into metal picks, I think PickBoy Meta Carbonate ones have been the longest lasting ones I have used. However, I don't know if they are still manufactured.
