Looking at getting another guitar..

Hello again! As most of you know by now, I just started playing guitar a few months ago, Got a Washburn X12 QVS in like new condition, and a Roland cube 30 which mostly everyone seems to say is a good starting combo. And then a few weeks ago I was sent two older guitars from my uncle, and they ended up being a JTG Infinity which I have restored and the other is a Hondo 775 series which I am working on. But for some reason I have the urge to get a Les Paul style guitar now... I know some of you are probably going to say there's no reason to get another guitar right now, but I feel like I need one. I've been working with my father recently and have almost 100$ saved up, but we're going out of town doing a job soon and I expect to make I hope around 150-200$. I've been looking at the local guitar shop, and I noticed an Epiphone Les Paul Studio. It's like a toothpaste green color to me if that makes sense but I'm not sure how to explain it exactly.. A few things I noticed, good and bad: It's missing a pickguard, and I wasn't sure how easy it would be to find one for an Epiphone studio, I've found them for Gibson but from I can tell they're quite different. Also it has after market (I think?) Pups in it. They say Seymour Duncan on them, but I haven't had the time to ask about them at the store yet, or try the guitar to see how it sounds. They're asking 250$ for it, but I think there's a chance that they could lower it a bit.

Thanks for any help!

Re: Looking at getting another guitar..

A pickguard isn't really all that necessary, and if it's an Epiphone LP Studio with Seymour Duncans in it, it's probably worth the $250. Make sure you play it though. It'll feel way different from your other guitars. (The scale length, height of the bridge, etc. Sometimes that makes a difference to people.)

Thanks!! About the pickguard, there's a nice sized hole in it where the pickguard used to be. About it being a studio, I just looked at the truss rod cover and it says "Studio"

I'm going to test it out before before or if I get it, and I'll post the names of the pups if I can find out.

Should be two screw holes. One by the neck and one on the side/edge.

A Les Paul Studio should have a set neck and dot inlays. Nicer inlays are a plus, but the main thing is that it's a set neck mahogany guitar, so it's *basically* a Gibson Les Paul, just much cheaper. They go for $300 new, so $250 with Seymour Duncans is fair.

Yeah, we were leaving so I only saw the one next to the neck.

If I remember correctly, it has a set neck but like rectangle/trapezoid shaped inlays.

Re: Looking at getting another guitar..

Given that you've only been playing for a couple months and already have three guitars, I think you would probably be better served waiting a while and learning to play before throwing money into more guitars.

I agree, but honestly, it will probably be sold sometime soon and I will feel bad if I don't get it.. If I do end up getting it, It'll be my last one for awhile!

As for the actual guitar, my father was looking at it today, it looks exactly like an Epiphone Les Paul Studio Deluxe. And the owner took it down, one of the pots wasn't working so the guitar tech came out, took it and set it up for free. Then he jammed out on it and according to my father it sounded amazing.

You are kidding right? Thats a terrible justification to buy something... Much worse things in life than feeling bad cause you didnt get a new toy... horrible things like.. cloudy days... flat pepsi...

Ill tell you a little secret... There is ALWAYS another good deal... ALWAYS another cool guitar. Once you have a couple its time to start looking for the ones you really want.

What? All I meant was that I really want it... Why else would I be getting one? I'm not getting it because it's a good price, I already wanted it before I knew it was even worth it. I couldn't care less if it's a good deal or if it sounds absolutely amazing.. Although, I do agree with what you said.... If everyone thinks it's not a great choice, I'll wait. Like I said, I have two working and one on the way.

If you are able to save that quickly, I would continue to save and then get your "one guitar" you will use and keep for a very long time. I would save until you are up to at least 600...and when you then get a guitar (decent deal) at that level you will probably want to play and practice even more. In the meantime, work your scales and chords, and learn new things and master them every day. Practicing your scales and chord progressions on an entry level guitar will make you better when you finally buy your first decent guitar. If you are spending a couple hours on your current guitar, then you will advance very quickly if you are working hard on mastering scales and chords/chord progressions. :-)

If you've been bitten by the bug, I wouldn't count on it...

Well, I both hope so and hope not..

Thanks!! As for the saving up, I got lucky to be able to work this week, usually the saving doesn't happen this quick. And actually currently if I don't spend what I have soon, it'll have to go to, 1st, a computer for college, and second, a new bowling ball... :(

Re: Looking at getting another guitar..

If you want it just get it man! You will learn faster if you like the guitar you play on.:fing2:

Re: Looking at getting another guitar..

yea
nicer guitars are fun to play

I have a cheap beater RG2 with tricked out duncans
that is really light with skinny flat neck
that I just love to play

I like playing it because it sounds good
fits my hand well
doesnt make my back hurt to play it

get something you like
you'll play more
and get better faster

just try not to start collecting

Ok, you should care the MOST about it being a good deal. If it's a good deal, you may be justified in picking it up. But think first of why you value it. Life is too short to be frivolous. You could just save that $250 towards getting an even better amp. Or maybe decent cables, cases, stands or a good entry level recording device.

Yeah, I guess that's true... But like I said, I know it sounds stupid but seriously if I don't get something soon, I will have to get something like a new computer. Again it probably doesn't make any sense, I know it doesn't to me.

Re: Looking at getting another guitar..

Not to be a party pooper, but... If you're computer is a necessity, that's probably what you need to be going for.

Well, I made it sound more serious then it is.. This is more like how it goes. Sometime in May, I'll be getting a computer. But, it'll be like a 300$ office PC, but I was told if I have the money, instead of getting that I can get 300$ towards a better one. Now, if I have money in May then that will happen, but if I don't have any money which I wont if I get this, then I can probably postpone getting one. But if I do end up getting one, it's gonna be like 400-500$ which will REALLY postpone my guitar buying, which is why I want one more before that.

I think that makes sense?

So there is a time limit on your guitar buying? Is there a rule that says you have to acquire x amount of guitars in y amount of time?

I dont begrudge you at all wanting a new guitar... but some of your justifications are a bit... thin...

I know it sounds stupid but yes there is a time limit. As for that, No. But I just wanted a Les Paul style before I have to take a few months off of buying anything guitar related..

I understand.. I'm going out to look at it and play it today, if I don't love it, I'll leave it be.
