Looking for a stack

hey everyone,

Assuming I can secure full time summer work, I am going to be ditching my crappy 15W SS Fender and go for a stack. There's a used JCM 900 Super Lead in town that I know of, and I'm not sure if it's been sold. I would like to get it if it hasn't and would be wondering what would be a fair used price for it?

If that's gone then I have a second choice: a Mesa dual rectifier head through either a Mesa or Marshall cab. What do you guys think of that? Personally, I've heard a few Mesa rectifiers, both a dual through Mesa cabs and a triple through a Marshall (using MIA Teles w/ buckers) and both had me drooling. I was wondering how much US $$ these suckers go for and if anyone has anything to say about them. Would you take a Dual rectifier over a JCM??

Thanks

Re: Looking for a stack

Well one thing I can say is that, if you don't care for the scooped mids/hair metal tones, don't get a JCM900 4X12 unless it has G1275 removed from them. Than there is a good chance it would good cab if the changes were done right. This cab is the biggest pain in my butt, it really does injustice to my Laney.

Re: Looking for a stack

Forgot to mention.

I play mostly punk and ska. I like to do some blues jamming with people and U2 and some metal on my own, but for band and gigging applications, it'll be punk and ska.

Re: Looking for a stack

Hmm ... than may be G1275s are for you .... a lot of sharp super bright highs ..

Re: Looking for a stack

If I do get a JCM 900 it probably wont be a matching cab. And I'm not into ice-picky highs.

So floor is still open, Mesa Dual Rectifier or Marshall JCM 900 and suggest a good, yet affordable cab.

Re: Looking for a stack

If you wanna fry your rectum on a double, it will cost you, a lot of people here have praised Avatar cabs for the buch they charge.

Re: Looking for a stack

It's a HUGE jump from a 15 watt 1x8" combo to a 100 watt 1/2 stack.

Are you really sure you need & can harness THAT much raw power?

I went through a similar evolution... ended up with 50 watts heads on 2x12 cabs.

Volumes more reasonable in more situations & I can usually lug it around without help.

Re: Looking for a stack

I wouldn't narrow it down to those two amps either. You can get a lot of great tones from a lot of great amps and not spend an arm and a leg.

If I was playing more ska with my punk I'd get an amp with better cleans and get my OD from a pedal. If you're goin for more of a dirty punk vibe nothing beats a cheap cranked Marshall. I guess the Rectifier would be better for cleans AND distortion than that Marshall...Marshalls seem to focus on raunchy crunchy dirt from my playin experience.

But when I really consider it, Tim Armstrong is probably the master of punk and ska, and he uses Rectifiers, so that's my suggestion.

edit: another thing i forgot to mention, make sure you have a place to use an amp like that. nothing's worse than staring at your sweet half stack while it collects dust in the corner because it's too loud to play casually.

+1

It's also a tremendous pain in the arse to move a half stack around. It may not look as cool, but your back will thank you for getting a head and 2X12 cab (even better would be two 1 X 12 speaker cabs).

Re: Looking for a stack

rectifiers are awsome for metal/rock sounds. very fizzy. turn them up and they start to growl. not entirely sure if they would suit what your playing. i could be wrong though.

Re: Looking for a stack

Sounds like you want a stack for the image, JCM and Dual Rec are two completely different beasts...

Two different beasts with the same idea- a higher gain sound. I'd group the 900, Dual Rec, SLO and 5150 in the same category, even though they're all substantially "different."

hahahaha well who DOESN'T play guitar for the image...c'mon man we're all just wannabe rockstars here...I say half stacks for everybody. Fullstacks would be even better.

I got over the image aspect of gear a while back. At least as far as stacks go. Gig for a couple of years with a halfstack, and no crew to help you, and you'll be begging for a nice combo. I did One gig with a full stack, and it was for appearance and image alone. Never again! You can't even use it any venue a smaller band would be playing in.

I say look at some nice 2x12 combos, or maybe even 1x12. Especially if it's just bedroom jamming.

Re: Looking for a stack

The amps you are considering are cool, and they would suit your style well. But for the most part, 100 watt tube amps are overkill unless you are playing stadiums. If you really have to have one of these amps, consider getting a 2x12 cab and an attenuator to help control your volume. I feel that between 30 and 50 watt tube amps are fine for anyone beyond the bedroom player.

Re: Looking for a stack

I don't see the "advantage" of a combo for most applications I've done- a 60 pound combo or a 50 lb cab with a 30 lb head carried in 2 loads. Cabs have casters... It can be a bit of a bear going up stairs, but it's nothing compared to a 92 lb 4x10 bass cab. Guitar player in my band has a VibroKing. No way in hell am I carrying that amp anywhere.

My back is cooked. I would absolutely love to find a 2x12 that sounds, feels and responds like a 4x12. I've played a lot of cabs. None of which come close. You're not going to find an open backed combo or a 2x12 cab that sounds, feels and responds like a 4x12. Conversely, you're not going to get an open backed combo sound out of a sealed 4x12.
