Low power, EL34 poweramps?

Re: Low power, EL34 poweramps?

Hey Erl...the VHT 2/50/2 is a 50w in stereo amp.

If run in mono, class A with the power level button in, the volume is probably more near 20 or watts. It's still loud but more manageable & sounds fantastic.

As for the cost, there's probably no way around that other than grabbing a used one.

The Fargen Bastage uses 1 EL34 for 4watts...

The Fargen mini-plex coaxes 8-12 watts out of 2 EL34s.

The Mini Plex has two cathode-biased EL34s wired in parallel. You don't get as much power this way, but the tone is noticeably richer in lower harmonics. The Mini Plex also has a Hi/Low power switch that reduces the amp's output from 12 to 8 watts by disabling one of the EL34s.

Not sure what the prices over there are like, but a UniValve is a good option if you like swapping tubes.

Keep us posted Erl :beerchug:

Thanks, Puckboy! :)

Those "Friggin Bastards" or what you called them, seems nice. I gotta check them out! :)

Get the univalve. I have one and it is great. You can use just one el34 and crank it. I run mine through a weber mini mass. You won't be disappointed.
umm, +1

Re: Low power, EL34 poweramps?

Dude if you want power tube distortion at bedroom level, you're looking at the most at 2W, unless you have very tolerant neighbors and parents. 30W will never get you anywhere close.

Re: Low power, EL34 poweramps?

Well, i'm not in the need of "bedroom distortion", i just want an amp that can be used at gigs, without just "idling" :)

Anyway, i'm very happy for all the replies i've got so far. But after some research i did on my own, i think that i've found an amp that can do all that i want, and some more: the Splawn Quick Rod! It's EL34, and sounds extremely good, though 100 watts. I migth live with it if i get an hotplate, though.

Thanks again,
-Erlend

Hey Faraday, I'm curious: Why do you use a mini-mass with the Univalve when it already has a built in Hot Plate?

Because the built-in hotplate is not nearly as good as a stand alone hotplate. The weber mini mass is much better than the built in hotplate and much cheaper than the stand alone. I love the univalve except for the attenuator.

GOTCHA.....thanks:beerchug:

I used to have a Univalve & loved it....might have to get another if I stumble on a good deal.

That was my only dealings with a Hot Plate....I have a full sized MASS for my Edana
