Hey Erl...the VHT 2/50/2 is a 50w in stereo amp.
If run in mono, class A with the power level button in, the volume is probably more near 20 or watts. It's still loud but more manageable & sounds fantastic.
As for the cost, there's probably no way around that other than grabbing a used one.
The Fargen Bastage uses 1 EL34 for 4watts...
The Fargen mini-plex coaxes 8-12 watts out of 2 EL34s.
The Mini Plex has two cathode-biased EL34s wired in parallel. You don't get as much power this way, but the tone is noticeably richer in lower harmonics. The Mini Plex also has a Hi/Low power switch that reduces the amp's output from 12 to 8 watts by disabling one of the EL34s.
Not sure what the prices over there are like, but a UniValve is a good option if you like swapping tubes.
