Mahogany strat???

Mahogany strat body with a one piece maple neck. Could this combo sound good?? Most starts that I have seen made from mahogany tend to have rosewood boards. What says you??

Re: Mahogany strat???

They sound great. Most bolt-on guitars I've played take more tonal characteristics from the neck than they do the body. It will basically sound like a Strat with maybe a little more low end definition. I've played a few Strats with mahogany bodies and they sound pretty much like Strats.

Heh. Not mine mate.

I own a 750XL with a sunburst finish. It's a mahogany body with a thick maple cap and a through neck. It's fantastic and it rings forever. Really, I need to get a good set of Super Distortions on next because the old pickups in it are starting to sound a little tired.

It's a heavy guitar though. Don't fancy gigging it lol :D

Re: Mahogany strat???

You seek the Fender Start-O-Sonic.

Mahogany Strat w/ P90's.

Excellent axe! No longer made, but I'd love to have one…

I could have had one of these a few years back. Played it in the local guitar shop. Was priced a bit on the high side, but I had to look twice tbh. They're a strange looking guitar and I remember this one was particularly heavy. Was tobacco-burst with a set of hot P90's in. Don't think they were the originals.

Played ok, but seemed to remember me not enjoying the neck.

That doesn't sound like a bolt-on neck at all. I was talking about bolt-ons, mate.

Re: Mahogany strat???

Mahogany body + all Maple neck = awesome tone! A lot of Wayne Charvel's "Monster Series" guitars had this combo. My dad had one with a JB and JB Jr. that was an epic tone machine!

The thing I love about that setup is you'll have a pseudo bottom end like a Gibson while retaining a bit of brightness.

Re: Mahogany strat???

Thank you all for the replies. If I do that it will be with a traditional SSS pickup configuration.

Re: Mahogany strat???

I have a partscaster with the body being mahogany.

"Mahogany" can describe a wide variety of different actual wood species, and within single species there is great variety in weight and structure. Those are big trees and there are many different place to cut out some board. My mahogany Strat with the same neck and the same Callaham trem doesn't sound significantly different from some alder Strats that I like.

Once you have a trem with a sustain block the body wood species gets less important. A bad body can still kill it but as long as it doesn't dampen it might be allright. Neck and truss rod matter a lot in Strats.

Re: Mahogany strat???

That is a fine combination. I've been thinking about that for my next build.

Re: Mahogany strat???

+ another for "go for it"!

Been thinking the same thing for a while now, just haven't had any funds for teh body...

Re: Mahogany strat???

Are you wanting traditional strat pickups "vintage" or like high output/hot pickups?
Definitely vintage. I decided to swap out the maple neck on my EJ strat for an EJ Rosewood neck and was thinking Mahogany could be a nice choice for a body to mate up with the EJ maple neck.
