Re: Man i love my les paul

I spent a couple hours this afternoon revising the wiring in my Les Paul Standard, for the 4th or 5th time since putting it back together.

It's harder to do a tidy wiring job in a Les Paul than I was expecting. This is a lot less hectic than my last attempt though.

I should have put insulation around the cap leads.

What kind of cans... er, I mean, caps are those??? HUGE!!

Those are Allparts oil & paper caps. They're an unnesessary expense, but it's kind of fun to play around with parts. If I really wanted to sink money into parts that don't sound that much better, Acme sells reproductions of Bumblebee caps, and those look a lot cooler. I think I'd want to do a hull hog '50s rewire before I'd buy those, where the braided cable from the jack goes all the way to the switch. That might be fun to try sometime.

Thanks for the info! Id never seen those. Yeah, I normally run orange drops, but have gotten scolded by a friend who is a luthier and elect guru stating that there isnt much if any benefit. Orange drops arent much more than radio shack cheapies so I dont mind.. I can't bring myself to droping $8-12 for hovelands or something..

I'm afraid your friend is right. You can get pretty much the same sound with greeny caps from RadioShack or PartsExpress. There's less than a volt in the average guitar circuit. You'll start hearing the difference the type of caps make in tube amps. In guitar circuits, you can hear the difference between .020uf, .022, or .023uf (these two both measured .023uf), but I could have gotten the same sound from ceramic caps.

I have some ceramic caps that're .022uf, and a bunch that're .001uf, and I could combine them to get .023uf, and get the same sound.

The important thing is being happy with the guitar though, so if you spend $50 on a pair of Bumblebee caps, and you think they're better, then it's a bargain.
