Mayhem question

I need to replace the stock pickup in my Destroyer, the Power Sound are horrible. I was looking at the Distortion Mayhem set and the Hot Rod set. I have used the Hot Rod set in the past and like the versatility of this set, but want a little output. Can anyone let me know how versatile the Mayhem set is?
These will be played though a tube amps and would like to able to cover Hair metal though modern metal.

Re: Mayhem question

I bought the same set for my mahogany and maple LP, and I was not happy with the neck pickup. I don't know what type of wood the destroyer is, but if it's all mahogany, I think you'd be better off with a different neck pickup. If I were you, I think I would probably buy the set, give it a shot, then try to take advantage of the 21-day return policy if it doesn't work out. I think you'll like the distortion bridge, though.

Re: Mayhem question

The Mayhem set would be awesome for what you want, go for it!

Also, why do you guys (chris, dave) dislike the Distortion Neck?

Re: Mayhem question

Thanks for the info.
The Destroyer has a mahogany body and maple/rosewood neck.
It looks like buy a set is a waste of money and I should just buy each pickup.

The set is around $130. The pair will run you $150 or so. So you can save $20 buying the pair. Remember, returning the pickup you don't like will only cost you shipping, if I understand correctly.

And the problem with the DDn is the super overpowering upper mids with very harsh highs. The pick attack is IMMEDIATE and harsh, then it sounds like you're always running a wah half-cocked because of the mids. I found the A5 to be much better in regards to the pick attack AND the overpowering mids. So the DDn is a pretty good neck pickup after a little work.

Re: Mayhem question

wait wait wait, are we talking IBANEZ destroyer? With a mahogany body!? IBANEZ MADE A GUITAR WITH SOMETHING OTHER THAN BASSWOOD!? That's awesome.

Re: Mayhem question

Yes they do. Most RGA, S, SA and X all have mahogany bodies. The basswood is saved for the RG line.
It looks like a Distortion in the bridge and a 59 neck would work the best for what I am after. I then a 12k pick in the neck will be too much.

Re: Mayhem question

I have a Distortion neck in a Jackson KE3, I've never been all that happy with it. (But then I also had a 59 neck in this guitar and never liked that either, even though I normally love the 59 neck.)
Like Chris Caruana, I prefer something "creamy" in the neck, so I'd recommend a Dimarzio PAF neck.

The bridge Distortion will work fine although I prefer the JB or DiMarzio Super Distortion myself.

The only way to find out what you want is to buy pickups and decide where they take you.

Re: Mayhem question

I say go with the distortion, bridge, and the '59, neck. If you dont like the DD, you can always put an A5 and make it a JB, or an A8, or A2 or whatever. There is a lot you can do with a DD and a few magnets

Re: Mayhem question

I like the duncan distortion neck in a les paul, though, but ONLY with a 250k pot! I found that what I want is hard to have in 1 pickup: smooth yet articulated. crunchy yet sweet. I noticed that having a smooth pickup with 1meg ohm pots wont cut the it, but a very bright pickup with a 250k pot will do the trick.

I like the duncan custom in the neck, for instance, with 500k. thats an exception to the rule :P but the distortion neck with 250k is very nice.

the distortion bridge is very nice too. I like the JB a bit more, I think...

The jazz is one of the best neckpickups I've heard in a long time, but ONLY with a 250k pot and an alnico8 bar...the bar beefs it up a bit in output and tone, and the 250k makes it a bit more smooth. about the jb: its great as it is. couldn't wish for something else, well, thats a small lie I suppose, but the JB is very, very good on its own.

Re: Mayhem question

I love my DD in an LP.

However, it is defintitely for heavier sport. for Hair metal, JB is the obvious choice, but a DD will work just fine.

Neck pup? Hair metal? Who cares? No one ever used them anyway!!!!!

+1 hair metal was all about the bridge pickup.....which 90% of the time was a JB

Either you've never done this before or you're forgetting something. Tell us which it is. And sorry if I'm calling you out unnecessarily, but I hate internet misinformation. It's not as simple as you make it out to be.

No I have both a JB and a DD and have done mag swaps on both. Right now I have a JB with an A2 mag in my kramer.
