Mesa Rectifiers

Re: Mesa Rectifiers

the slant 1x12 cracked me up big time  ... still a light, portable and not unbelievably loud, I think it's a win, also it's unfair to compare price tags between used and new stuff.

Not really contributing, except to say, i like this :

Re: Mesa Rectifiers

I'd definitely gig a 30 watts recto... unless I need any kind of clean (still, rectos aren't bought for cleans so...)

Re: Mesa Rectifiers

Not here :(

Used Dual Rec's usually part for around $1,200. I got my Single for $950 used.

I suspect that the new Mini-Rectifier will retail at around $1,100 (slightly higher than the Transatlantic 15). The national distributor in Canada also insists on a strict pricing policy, so I approach is to buy used.

Mesa doesn't have a Canadian distributor... the dealers buy direct from the factory.

There was a price hike when our dollar was around 70-80 cents on the US dollar, but now that they're dollar has dropped Canadian pricing is on par. Of course, most people selling used still price their used amps like they cost 20-30% more retail... but who can blame them?

That said, if you have a dealer in the NWT he might have a cost of doing business in the great white north tax added.

Re: Mesa Rectifiers

Ouch ... L&M informed me that they were the only distributors for Mesa in Canada and TBH I've never seen another guitar store carrying them (in Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver admittedly). Claimed they couldn't negotiate prices either. Now that I found out otherwise ... I'm kind of pissed off.

We only got one guitar store in town and they don't even sell tubes. So it's a drive down to Edmonton for gear. I hear you on the used asking prices as well. One local here had a Dual + the 4x12 and was asking for $2,800.

Re: Mesa Rectifiers

That little mini recto is cool!

I give people hell about "rectumfriers" and whatnot, but I really dig the amp with the right speakers/cab. I tried the dual with the oversized recto cab and it was buzzy fuzzy nasty treble mess. Next time I went into the shop they had it sitting on a 5150 cab (Peavey- before EVH jumped ship), and it sounded glorious through that- especially the vintage lead mode. I'd like to run that minirec through a H30 or GB25 and see how it sounds.

Re: Mesa Rectifiers

my friend used a Roadking lying around a studio during a recording. He has Dunc designed actives in a...some guitar. Anyways, it sounded apocalyptic, like a Japanese war-robot vomiting HarleyDavidsons into an active volcano at will. he plays heavy-type ska, so it was big, crisp, and impossibly violent. i was lime green jello when i heard it (he usually plays a solidstate Marshall, which he complained sounded terrible loud.) then the band broke up.... anyways, Roadking:worth testdriving, fer sure.
The only time i ever heard a Dual Rectifier was Michael Gira's combo, Swans tour 95, which, of course, sounded divine, like a tattoo of my mom on God's flexed bicep. But everything the Swans do live usually sounds absurdly crystalline, while your hair blows back perfectly horizontal and your ribs rattle apart ever so wonderfully.

Re: Mesa Rectifiers

Nice description.
Love that pic, I have gotta try one out.

Re: Mesa Rectifiers

Though, cleans have never been the Rectos strongpoint the TREM-O-VERB and Roadster/Roadking II's undoubtedly have the best cleans.

The Blue Angel is in the Recto series and has the best cleans of any Mesa, ever. Of course it has no master volume, so it has purely output tube distortion which sounds amazing.

I forgot about the Blue Angel, however, it seems to me that this thread is mostly in regards to higher gain Rectos. Having said that, I understand that the Blue Angel is a lower gain Recto.
